5 feet would be the best if possible.

try to make your koi pond as big as your bugdet allows, because you will definetly need it as the koi get bigger. you should spend an extra 1000 dollars to make a bigger pond, rather spending another 5000 for a bigger pond.

Hi new Koi boy,

Deeper is better. Go for 6 feet if you can. The idea is to go below the frost line if you have winter and koi develop better with more depth. Hope this helps

cheers..

I agree with GCSpyder. I'm still building my pond and it 6feet deepSmile.
If you are restricted going up I'm sure you're not restricted doing down unless there's a sewer pipe or something.Wink

well how i see it is...see what your climate conditions are...if you live where its cold all the time then i would say around 4-5 ft...i live in a warm/cool climate...and i only dug around 3-3 1/2 ft...

Koi develope best in depth of at least 5ft to 6 ft. The depth keeps the water cool for the kois. Shallow water tends to heat up in warm climates and the metabolism of the fish is high making them very active and difficult to put on weight. And in cold climates, you then face icing problems. The deeper the better, for warm or cold climate. Cheers

me and new koi boy live in california, we have very mild winters, never gets below 45 in the city. But he should still build it deep, just for the kois sake.

Hi Alex,

The ideal depth of a koi pond is 3 times the length of your largest koi. This is from the famed breeder Mr. Hiroji Sakai of the Sakai fish farm of Hiroshima.

Quote

I believe that the desirable depth is three times the length of a koi body. For example, I believe the ideal depth for a 50cm koi is 1.5 meters, and for an 80cm koi is 2.4 meters. If too shallow, the back becomes warped.

You may have 5cm koi now, but with TLC, water quality, your koi will grow to jumboShockedLaughLaugh

Koi will grow to 1.2mtrs long. That's the biggest koi I've seen in pic.ShockedShockedShocked

how long will it take a 5inch koi to grow 10inches..?? i had one koi grow one inch in a year... but i blame the small pond... with my bigger pond, i would expect them to grow faster... or how does it work..???

Hi Gumbii,

We had our local show on sunday past and there were two koi that were 11 months and both fish were just over 18" so that may give you some idea.

Hi gumbii,

I've a tosai kohaku measuring 6 inches last December and it's more than 16 inches now. I also have another Kohaku growing from about 10 inches to 24 inches in 9 months Cool. Bloodline plays an important factor, followed by pond size, water quality and food.

I like to see all propper ponds at 2 meters to 2.4 meters.
For some reason fish seem to get fatter with more depth.
The length should be 2.5 times the width for some reason I forgot a long time ago.
