55 Gallon Bioload Can't Post

I will be putting 7 Kois (5-7") into a temporary 55 gallon aquarium...until I finish my indoor pond. If I were to use a rena filstar xp4 and an aquaclear 110 (formerly aquaclear 500) loaded with biomedia, will my filtration be able to handle the bioload? I'll be feeding the Kois 2-3 times a day, 1 minute duration per feeding.

Thanks!

I dont' know anything about the filter system you describe so I can't answer your question directly.
Any time you have Koi in a small amount of water you have to oversize the filter dramatically to compensate for it. With 7 Koi averaging 6" you should have a minimum filter size rated for a 500 gallon pond. If it is possible for you to get some mature biomedia it would really help, as the filter will have to mature to keep up with the ammonia no matter how big it is. Adjust your feeding rate down as the filter begins to mature and only feed as much as the filter can handle.

larz,

Thanks for the info. I'll probably have to add another power filter just to be safe.

Hey Ghost,
I tried to grow out 5 5-7 inch Koi through the winter in my 90 gal tank. I was running a Fluval 404 filter. At first there were no issues but after the fish reached 8 inches I had to remove 2 koi. The 3 left were still too much for me to handle. I started out having to do weekly water changes of about 40%. By spring time I was having to do 40% 2-3 times a week to keep ammonia levels down. I was feeding 2-3 times per day.
Your filters are a little better but the tank is also smaller. I would suggest only feeding once per day.
