Activated Carbon and Zeolite Properties Can't Post

Since there seems to be some confusion about these two wonderful water purifiers I have posted some excerpts from my web-site www.wernersponds.com in the hope of helping to clear up some of these myths.
"Activated Carbon has been used for quite a while now, but I wonder how many of us understand why and what it actually does.
High to very good adsorption on:
Antimony
Arsenic (Treated wood Leaches Arsenic into the Water)
Bismuth
Bleach
Chloramines
Chlorine
Chromium
Colors
Dyes
Hydrogen Peroxide (Disconnect if treating Pond)
Insecticides
Monochloramine
Odors
Pesticides
Phenols

Good to Moderate adsorption on:
Acetic acid
Cobalt
Detergents
Hydrogen Sulfide
Mercury
Ozone
Potassium Permanganate
Silver
Soap
Solvents
Vinegar

Low to no adsorption on:
Alkalinity
Ammonia (See Zeolite below)
Barium
Beryllium
Cadmium
Carbon Dioxide
Copper
Hardness
Iron
Lime
Manganese
Molybdenum
Nitrates
Selenium
Tungsten
Zinc

How well the adsorption process works depends on the time in the water (and the pollutant), How much water is passing through how many pores on the carbon, the concentration of the pollutant and the solubility and molecular weight of the compound being removed.

Large ( Macroporous )Lignite and wood based carbon is good for organic and color removal.
Small ( Microporous) coal or coconut shell carbon is better at removing chlorine from water that has few organics. ( Not suited for Ponds)

Contact Time--a minimum of five minutes up to one hour depending on the organic. Recommended flow is 2 gallons per minute.

Zeolite--1 gram of Zeolite will remove 1.5milligrams of ammonia from a liter of water.

By using this data, it seems apparent, that separate bags of Carbon and Zeolite placed in your Bio filter in a coarse net bag will remove a lot of the contaminants and help your Koi breathe easier.

Thanks Werner. Looks like the twin combination of the zeolite and activated carbon would make a Lethal Weopon against most dreaded toxins known to Koi, much like Mel Gibson and Danny Glover against drug lords and terrorists.

Cheers!
