Advice needed on new pond PH ! Can't Post

I have just completed construction of my 4,000 litre in ground concrete pond. I used G4 pond sealant to "seal" the pond. Soaked the pond (with the pump running)for 72 hours initially and totally discharged all the water.

After that I placed in the filter medium, I have a 3 chamber filter - 1st I use "The Answer" by Evolution Aqua as the mechanical filter ( replaces the nylon brushes etc.), 2nd chamber is the bio chamber in which I have bio-mats, 5 x 7kg bags of Zeolite, 4 x 7kg bags of oyster shells, 4 x 1kg of BIOHOME sintered glass and 3 x BioRings by ANGEL(for bacteria growth and housing). I have added bacteria cultures every 3 days and have also added in 9kgs of salt. And the 3rd chamber just houses the "cleaned" water to be pumped out by the pump back into the pond.

With this configuration, my pond has been running for about 10 days and the PH is at 8.4 in the mornings and around 8.6 in the HOT afternoons. How can I lower the PH ?

Can I add my koi's into the pond ? I currently have 1 x 50cm Showa, 1 x 45cm Gold Ogon, 1 x 45cm Goshiki, 1 x 50cm Kohaku all of whom I have reared in a small fibreglass tank since they were no more than 10cm to 15cm long (I have tremendous emotional attachment to my koi's !)! So I am wondering if I can introduce my precious koi's into the pond in the current PH and climate and more importantly is it safe ? And how can I bring the PH down to between 7 to 7.8 ?

Your kind advice is most deeply appreciated !

Hi Chua

Congratulations for creating a wonderful pond for your kois! I am sure it is beautiful with all the landscaping and when the kois start to live in it!Smile

I am sure you are aware by now that kois can tolerate a wide range of pH - from 7 to 9. I assume you feel more comfortable with a pH of between 7 - 7.5? Mine is around that region.Cool Since you have yet to introduce fishes into the pond, may I suggest you use lots and lots of pineapple skin and put them into the pond. The natural acidity of the skin will 'neutralise' some of the alkalinity thus reducing the pH. Some people who can get hold of hydrochloric acid uses that to lower the pH.

After a few days, test the pH and see. It should reduce the pH quite significantly. If possible, perhaps you can buy one or two cheap kois to try out the pond. If they do not seem to be uncomfortable with the water, then you can introduce your beloved kois into the pond safely.

Test the water parameters daily (ie pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrates and KH and DO if you can) and once the readings have stabilise, that means the good bacteria have started to colonise the filter media. Take note that zeolite is only a temporary solution in absorbing ammonia. Once it loses its absorbing qualities it has to be re-charged otherwise, it will re-release the poisonous stuff back into the water.

Putting in bacteria cultures into your filter now will not be effective since there are no 'food' for the bacteria to feed on. As I have said, put in 2 cheap kois and feed them a little. The waste from these kois will be food for the bacteria.

I wish you all the best and do let us know your progress.

Rgds

Hi Chua!

Just wanna add on something that Johnson has told you. When you put the pineapple skins into the pond, make sure you have no koi in the pond! If not, the pH will drop and will shock your kois! This will be troublesome! Hopefully your koi will live in the pond happy soon!

Regards,
John

Forum members now tend to forget this has developed into a international forum and not limited to Malaysians. The query was raised by one who talks abt biohome, Zeolite etc. Something which is foreign to a Malaysian.

The advice is valid but pineapple skin may be equally foreign to him!Laugh

Hi THTAN

Yes we are all aware that our forum has gone 'international' and some queries may be from friends of other countries.Smile

However, before replying to chua, I checked to make sure that advice given to him is applicable but there were no indication of where he is writing from. Anyway, that is the reason why I mentioned pineapple skin and also hydrochloric acid, just in case the former is not freely or cheaply available.Cool

Anyway, I disagree with you in that if a person asks about biohome and zeolite, it does not automatically mean he/she is a foreigner. Biohome and zeolite is as common here in Malaysia today as in anywhere else!Wink

Thanks for the reminder anyway!

Hi,

Totally agree Jonson.

The fact is that no matter where you ar ein the worl, Pineapples are pinapples and the skins can always be obtained. You don;t have to munch your way through 50 pineaplles to get the skins. You can obtain these from your local fruit seller or most resturants.

Can I make a suggestion ?.

Whould it be possible to update your profiles to include you country. I understand that you may not want anyone to know your real name or what you do for a living, but including your country will enable us to help you much more quickly when you have problems.

I would also reccomend that mr. Khoo makes it a compulsory field for new members. I can't see any down point in this, but maybe someone else can.

Hi Johnson, thank you for sharing your experience with me. Just to clear things up, I am from Singapore. After reading through your post, I actually went out and bought 3 30cm Koi's and introduced them to the pond. They seem very happy. I hope all goes well as I am quite eager to introduce the rest of my koi's to the pond ASAP. I do hope that the koi's will begin to "settle down" my bio filter. Anyway, I strongly recommend people who have nightmarish time in cleaning up their mechanical filter chambers (nylon brushes, mats etc...) to get "The Answer" from Evolution Aqua, as my experience with it has been wonderful so far ! Just make sure you have a bottom drain in your filter compartments !

Hi chua

Hopefully your bio-filter will kick in soon so that you are able to put in your beloved kois!Cool You've got quite a few big beauties, maybe you can post some pictures once everything has settled down!

About The Answer, how much does it cost in S'pore and is it really able to replace our regular mechanical filters?

Stuart, agree with you about the need to identify the country of the member!Wink It makes it easier for us to dispense advice without the need to guess if the advice given is applicable or not. Perhaps, Mr Khoo (webmaster) can help us on this!Cool

Re: [johnson lee] Advice needed on new pond PH ! [In reply to] Can't Post

I bought "The Answer" from Max Koi Farm who are the dealers for this filter medium and got it from Max for $1,900 . I strongly recommend it as it has taken the hassle we all have of cleaning the mech chamber despite numerous flushings ! Now all I have to do is to fulsh the chamber for less than half a minute to "clear away" all the dirty solids. The manual does recommend that we clean and inspect "The Answer" every 6 months which is a simple washing out og the 100 micron screen (very simple and quick !) Anyway, the filter is working well, and the bio filter is superb (so far !) so I hope that it continues like that (keeping my fingers crossed !) Thanks for the kind advice guys ! PH reading to day is 8.3, so I guess something right must be happening !

Hi chua

Thanks for the description of the Answer! Converting to ringgit would mean it would cost me more than RM3K! Probably too expensive for me at the moment!Crazy

I guess I'll have to stick to my faithful brushes and nets to do the mechanical filtering!Unsure Gotta clean the 1st chamber weekly to remove the solids but it only takes me 1/2 hr, so not too bad.Cool

Hope everything goes well for you!
