Re: [chriswu3311] Algae bloom after heavy rain? [In reply to] Can't Post

Its the 21st of June today, so its been 7 days since the trickle tower with bioballs began.

As a user of a trickle tower with plastic bioballs, 7 days is not long enough for the bacteria to coat and mature on the bioballs. From the top of my head it took as long as 56 days or 8 weeks before my bioballs showed any improvement with the green water problem I had in my pond.

Is it a concern? No. The plastic coating of the bioball is much more slippery than your usual lava rock (which is why lava rock TTs can show an improvement within days or housrs). Exercise patience and in time the improvement in water quality will come.

I notice that you also have some plants in your water system in what looks like a bog filter. If these plants are rooted in garden soil, they may be adding phosphate to your water which encourages algae growth. You may want to consider re-potting the plants in coarse sand to eliminate this algae food source if that is the case. It will also be helpful to add Koi Clay to your water, as it absorbs phosphate from the water and starves the algae.

Hi chriswu3311,

Your pond capacity is just about the same as mine around 8000lit. Mine is 30' x 5' x 2' and my water treatment main chamber is only 3' x 5' x 2' plus another 2' x 2' x 2' which is a plants box cum waterfall cum water treatment too.

I have inside the pond 18 kois 6 of 30cm and 12 of 14-16cm. My pond is just 1 month old and the water still clear and clean.

For the water treatment, I only used Skippy system in both chambers. The main treatment chamber has 4 compartment, 1st for settlement with brushes 3'x1'x2', 2nd compartment also 3'x1'x2' with Jap mat, 3rd compartment is the Skippy 3'x2'x2' and the 4th is for pump 13000lit/hr @ 3'x1'x2'.

I placed a 15w UV light in 1st compartment and one AC/DC air pump, to supply bubbles for the Skippy system and 1 line into the pond and also 1 bundle of 10kg corals hanging in the net in the 4th pump compartment to stablise the water PH.

I made my Skippy system as recommended by Eddie in this forum, its just using the ordinary kitchen green scrub pads @ RM0.70/pack of 5pcs and just throw them into the compartment with water flow from bottom up plus air bubbles to enhance oxygen. Its very cheap treatment system and very effective.

That's all for keeping my pond water clear.. (Refer attached)
*In the picture, I used the scrub pads as per the Skippy system spec and not bioballs.

You may refer to "Pond construction and filtration system" under "My Shallow Pond" threat in this forum.

Thanks for the comment Abangk, but i think i wont make any change for my filter rite now.
Bcos my pond water slowly turn back to clear on 23 June until today the water is totally clear.
Do u think my t.t effective to the green water? or may be the bio filter?
from green to clear the t.t run 10days only.
Any way thank u so much for all of u from this forum,

Re: [chriswu3311] Algae bloom after heavy rain? [In reply to] Can't Post

I think you've had several things at work here. You had heavy rains mingled with bright sunshine. Algae will bloom after a heavy rain quite easily as the rainwater adds massive amounts of nitrogen from the atmosphere along with whatever else it happens to pick up in the air. When you shaded the pond it helped to starve the algae of the sunlight it needed and your water cleared as a result. When you removed the shade it once again went green because the algae had what it needed (nitrogen and sunlight for photosynthesis). Adding the Trickle tower has definitely been a benefit.
Trickle towers provide you with two things. They add volume to your biofiltration as the media will colonize nitrobacters and process ammonia and nitrite together with the rest of your filtration. It has the added benefit of acting as a degassing column to rid your water of Nitrate (in the form of nitrogen) and excess carbon dioxide, which improves the oxygen carrying capacity of your water. Even though the bacteria in the TT is not doing much yet, the degassing begins immediately as your clearer water shows.
