Ammonia is 0 but Nitrite is 8.0 Can't Post

I have a temp pool at about 800gal. I do have a lot of koi in it right now tell my 3000gal pond is done. I have about 250" of koi from 12" to 24". My amonia is at 0 but the nitrite is at 8.0. What can I do for now to bring down the nitrite?

It simply mean that the filter is not able to cope with the load yet. Change water and reduce feeding will keep your nitrite low for the time being.

Also add salt to make a 0.1% salt concentration (100g rock salt per 100L or 22.2gal of water) to reduce nitrite toxicity. Smile

Dear snguyen4, a salt concentration of 0.03% is too low. However a concentration of 0.1% to 0.3% is fine and good to maintain throughout this period until the nitrite level is undetectable.

Hi all
My gut feel of nitrites at 8.0 and ammonia reg. zero seems impossible. Many fish would have got into trouble and some could have died. Also you will not have time to look for corrective solutions to save them except thro' major water change immediately.
1.How big is the filter system fitted to the temp pool?
2.What is the reading for pH?
3.What about KH?

Hi Mark!
I'm sorry but the Nitrite is at 5.0 or more because the kit I have only goes upto 5.0 and I put 8.0 by mistake. I will do another test repost. By the way I have 150gal of small rocks for filter to about 750gal of pool water.

I did a test again and here are the results after a 50% water change
Ammonia is 0
Nitrite is 5.0+
KH is at 105 or so

The Kois are all ok. They are swimming and looking for food but I'm trying to not feed them to much. I also added salt to .5% as my local koi farm say they use .5%. Does any one have any new ideas or comments about the salt or what I need to do to releave the stress on the koi. The pool is 10' round and water is 16" high.

hi snguyen
Your nitrites is 5.0? or 0.5?
According to my nitrites test kit chart (Tetra brand), a nitrite reading of above 4 is considered dangerous which is the uppermost in the scale of the test kit.

To address the problem, you may like to consider the following points (take it from me I had a tough time trying to control the nitrites and ammonia levels until I follow the below points - all thanks to nice chaps like Mark and others):

1. Is your biofilter box correctly set up?
2. Do you have enough bio media to encourage good bacteria?
3. Any buffer in your biofilter like coral chips, oysters shell?
4. Do a frequent change of water like 10% daily.

Regards
Dennis
