Peat as a thoery reduces GH and KH, making water softer and reducing its buffering capabilities. It doesnt directly reduces your pH, but it does make your water more receptive to pH fluctuations. I dont really know how to directly reduce pH, sorry, but im sure low KH would help in a way. Ive been toying with the idea of softening my water with peat. but to be quite honest dont really know what real peat is! peat which is generally use in the west is from marshland-wet decomposed layers of organics. here in our nic of the woods, i guess peat is paya bakau-swamps. what is sold in garden centers as peat here is namely coconut shells. so dont really know its effect on lowering KH and GH. be interesting to see your results!!
