Bacteria Powder Can't Post

Hi all,

I went to the fish shop today, and told the owner about my green water.
He introduced me to some brown colored bacteria powder.

A tub of it (about 1 kg) cost about RM55. I asked the owner what this does, and he told me that it breeds bacteria in the filter ( i have a 6 foot deep filter about 4 x 6). Pond is 18x8x4 ft.

Have anyone of you used this bacteria powder before? It looks like yeast powder.

Appreciate if you have experience using it, how to use it, qty vs size of pond, duration of maturity, how often you add into pond, and most imptly, does it work and any effects on fishes?

Cheers.

Agreed... However I currently building a Bio filter and was sold a product called ' Cycle' to do the same thing... encourage the bacteria to grow... expensive... 12US

No, it has no name. It comes in the form of a tub (like chinese new year cookie tub, red top, and transparent bottom).
And in it, brown colored yeasty looking like powder... might send a pic in later.

Is it enzymes? In US there is all kinds of powdered form enzymes that are suppose to help clear water. i think it does eat up the dead stuff in the water which helps to delay algae growth. I add enzymes to my water a lot, it is fish and plant safe. I still have green green water. cuda

Once I tried too hard to control things in the pond....the frogs left.

Zoul--The Japanese clay products are called Refine and Refresh. They seem to intensify some koi colors but have little if any effect on algae.

Every bacterial additive does one thing, digest sludge, which eventually will starve algae. It may take 2-9 months for any difference to be noticed. As far as seeding bacterial filters, they just don't make anything that speeds up mother nature's plan.

I would worry about a bulk purchase of bacteria powder that has no label, no brand name and is expensive. There are no controls on this industry and you may spend your hard earned dollars on nothing more than sawdust or colored water.

This is what I bought. Bacteria powder.
After adding it according to dosage, after 2 weeks, the water becomes even more greener.
Am not sure what is happening.

Anyone have a clue?

Hi cplng..

i have used the ocean free bacteria powder before, they give me very good results.. eventually i found out dat bacteria need 'house' to grow n stay on... what kind of filter media do u use? is it sufficient for ur pond? bacteria powder without bacteria 'house' is useless..IMHO..

cheers

Re: [koi@kit] Bacteria Powder [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Kit,

I have a 4' x 6' x 6' deep filter pond with 3 chambers. One of the chamber is filled with small broken coral bags (about 30 bags) and with a top layer thick green filter mat above the coral bags. I believe that's sufficient.

I also have a UV light (32W) that's permanently on for 24 hrs.

3 months ago, I have to re-start the process of re-building bacteria all over again. The pond water (18' x 8' x 4' deep) was drained including the filter water. I think that effectively flushed out all the bacteria that has been growing in my pond environment since.

Eversince I restarted about 3 months ago, I have added a bottle of Nutrafin bacteria supplmenet (500ml) into it capsful basis, for about a month. Water remains green (and my pond is in direct sunlight almost 2/3 of the day). I add in the Nutrafin bacteria from day 1, when the water was pretty clear.

A few weeks later, the pond turns greener (but still can see bottom of pond). I changed the UV light bulb. Two weeks passed, and nothing happened. I read somewhere, that pond changes to clearer water within 2-3 days after UV. Mine didn't.

Then out of desperation, I went to buy this bacterial powder, hoping this is the cure-all.
Put in the bacteria powder according to measure, and one week later, the water turns even more greener!!! Cannot see bottom already.

Kit, perhaps, you can give me some tips how to use this, and the time frame you expect to see some results.

I put a spoon (the spoon that comes with the pack) directly into my filter chamber and leave it there for 3-4 days before I put in another "maintenance" spoon. I have since done this 3 times and am not doing anything more, as the water turns greener and greener by the day....!!!

Help?

Hi cplng,

I don't like using chemicals in my pond so I can't comment on those chemicals. From my understanding your pond is still suffering from new pond syndromeShockedWink ................What is your biofilter???

What you can do is stop feeding for 2 days. Resume feeding after 2 days but only few pellets per day. Check you water for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Benificial bacteria in your biofilter takes about 4 to 6 weeks to kick off. Once you've detected nitrate it means that your biofilter has kicked off(started).

We still need the info of your biofilterSmile

Jon

hi cplng..

i have to agree with tai lo koi38's advice.. well from ur explanation..

1.i think its better for u not to use the UV as they kill bacteria..

2.check ur turn over rate, i guess they r too slow, u need 1 to 1 1/2 turn over rate per hour..

3.ur filter chamber shud be arrange like this.. mat... mat... coral bags..

gud luck

Hi cplng,

I'm with Sai Lo Kit. Your pond is 14.5Tons. Looking at your filter bay I can't see any media that can fix your problem. You need lots of media(with lots of O2) like Japanese matts, K1 or BH for the benificial bacteria to live on . You pump chamber is large, why don't you ustilise half of it, make it usefull by adding more media. Water turn over should be at least once every hour, what is your pump size???

BTW, nice pondWink

Jon

Hi,

I've noticed your pond's water surface is very still. It may help if you increase aeration to maximise the DO of your water.

For your pond size, additional aeration with either a Hi-blow 60 or 80 through an air tube directly into your pond will help improve your water clarity. Maximise the DO level of your pond water will help the nitrifying bacteria to thrive.

Cheers,
Dennis

Re: [dechoong] Bacteria Powder [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi all,
Thank you for all your advice.

I had my pond builder over (who's a koi fanatic himself) to come and take a look yesterday.
He peered into the walls of the pond, and indeed classify the case as a case of new pond syndrome.

He saw good algae growing (sticks to the wall and hard in texture) and he also saw bad algae (fluffy, hairy type) disappearing. Said I need to be patient.

Also said that my pond's filter has too much dirt, and recommend a good washing.
Also said that corals need to be added, to encourage more bacteria growth as current media probably is insufficient.

Next weekend, filter will be washed.
Corals added...and requred to add more patience...maybe months before I can see results.

Dennis,
i do have airflow pump around the sides of the pond. Thanks for the advice...maybe I need to add a few more.

All,
Thanks for advice. I keep progress on this so that others may learn.
Cheers.
