Barley straw Can't Post

Does anyone know if wheat straw will work like barley straw for algea control? Wheat straw is plentiful in our area but barley is not grown at all. I'd rather buy big bales at farm prices since I have a 5,000 gallon pond with a major hair algae problem.

Re: [tracydr] Barley straw [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Tracy,

Hair algea is cause by high nitrates and directsun light.

I'm not sure if wheat straw will have th esame effect as barley straw.

However Barley staw will only stunt the growth string algea, it will not kill it. I have posted a few alternatives to barley straw in this forum.

If you do a search on this topic you will find the answers you seek.

Stuart
