Can I still keep koi if my pond is 3 1/2 feet deep? Can't Post

My dad just built a pond and it turned out being only 3 1/2 feet deep. The pond holds about 2000 gallons of water and it has its own filter setup and waterfall. I live in Alaska and it is very likely that the pond is going to freeze, that is why I bought one of those de icer dishes that you place in the center of the pond. I've read from other pond books that the recommended depth for a pond to keep koi is 4-6 1/2 feet. Is there anything I can do to keep koi in the pond? I'm planning to only keep 2.

im not familiar with your winter temps. but have you a facility too take them indoors? koi are near death at 1-2c especially for prolonged periods. i would suggest if the answer is no ten a heater and maybe a backup would solve the problem. and use a cover, both to lessen the electricity bill and stop the wind chilling the surface.hope this helps a little. mike

Hello, there are many things you can do, from covering the pond with plastic, which will help alittle with temp, to simple bring them into a garage or something for the winter, the depth is fine, remember that they should eat very little during the winter months.
