Can I use 'lala' shells as pH buffer? Can't Post

Hello everyone,

I'm not sure if the name 'lala' sounds familiar to u, but it's a seafood that can be eaten(the content of the shell).

Here's how it looks like

Looks good. But my question is, is it suitable to use it as pH buffer? Does it contains calcium carbonate..?

Thanks.

hi Roger,
You can use shells for buffering Ph. It take sa lot to get the job done right. It would be much easier to use baking soda. Regular old arm & Hammer stuff. Much Easier. How much you need really depends on your pond. That will help to keep your kh levels up. Just watch them before and after heavy rains. Hard rain can cause these levels to crash.

Hi

Hope you enjoyed your meal I guess you would wash them before use......LOL

But it is my understanding that any calcium based shell will buffer Ph but the real smooth glass like finish on some may inhibit the process unless you crushed them up.

I believe these are also called "pippies" in some countries like Australia.

Here's an idea. If you have a PH kit, crush a sample of these shells into dust (or as close as possible) and then do a PH test to see where these shells are at.

In regards to their use after dinner, I'd boil the remaining shells in hot water for at least 10 minutes to allow the oils to be cleaned off.

wanna ask, how many shells would be sufficient for a 1000 gallon pond? Is it necessary to crush them?

Put in as many as you have. Crushing them will increase the surface area/volume ratio making them dissolve faster when the pH changes.
