Cleaning of biofilter box Can't Post

hi guys

I am a complete novice in koi keeping. I have some questions and hope anyone can enlighten me on the following:

The problem of my kois in the indoor pond is they always hide under the shaded part of the pond. How to get them out?

Also, I have this pond for more than a year about 15 months and I never ever clean the biofilter box .. yet the water looks clean. I do change the water by adding water straight from the tap after removing the water (about 20%). Touch wood! So far no problem. The reason I could not clean the biofilter box is due to my physical constraints. So is the pond doing fine without any cleaning of its filter at all?

warmest regards
Dennis

With regard to your shy away fishes, it is recommended that you introduce a couple of koi from the Kawarimono family. They are basically the Chagoi (my preference and its the cheapest), Soragoi, and Ochiba Shigure. More information on this family of koi can be found here.

I recall Nippon Koi selling $5 per koi during the last(7th) koi Show at World Trade Centre in Singapore. Maybe they will do the same again this year at Changi Expo...who knows?

Thanks Mark. I do have an orange chagoi which is the least shy of the lot when feeding time occurs. It is still shy nevertheless. The rest will only come out when I walk away and one can hear the thrashing of the water as they eat happily!

Dennis

Hi Dennis,

Most bio filter does need cleaning as the filter are equipped with a good prefilter such as settlement chamber. Most of the heavy waste are removed at this stage. If you system does not have any pre-filter, then cleaning can not be avoided at certain stage.

Hi Dennis,
The size of your koi has to be bigger then the rest and if problem exists, add in another one. I have 4 in my pond. Honestely, they are not that ugly afterall as some hobbyists commented.

Hope this helps.

Cleaning of biofilter box [In reply to] Can't Post

hi
I finally managed to clean my biofilter after more than a year for the first time. Well I just rinsed the charcoal bag and clean thoroughly the cotton mesh. Also wash the synthetic fibre. I must say the filter box is fairly huge (about 25% volume of the main pond) and I remembered to leave some "old" mature cultured bacteria behind.

The pond now looks much cleaner (scrubbed the flooring of the pond too) and the fishes look happier.

Thanks for the advise
regards
Dennis
