Cleaning the bottom of the pond Can't Post

I have a 3.5feet deep pond with a concrete floor, and can see leaves and other scum at the bottom. Unfortunately the floor is flat, rather than sloping, so it's probably not very effective in removing the bottom gunk through the bottom drain.

Apart from jumping in and scooping the gunk out, which will probably stir up the lot as well and make the whole pond murky. what are efficient ways to clean the much from the bottom of the pond?

I was thinking of getting a long hose, and letting one end hang out of the garden into the drain which hopefully is lower that the floor of the pond. Then let gravity do the work!

Also, as I'm new to kois and ponds, any sifus in this forum that I can contact to get advise and tips?

Cheers!

Hi cykoed,

your idea on usng the long hose is good but will probably work as good as if you have a pond vaccum. With the vaccum, you can probably suck in more dirt than using the hose on its own. If you dont have a pon vaccum, you could try a power head instead attached to a pole to do this, although it'll be albit harder to suck in all the dead leaves...

Cheers

YOu need a pretty big hose to suck up lots of leaves. I use a net to carefully tak ethem out. You will stir things up and cloud the water. It will settle again. Then use your hose idea to clean otu the small stuff. To keep this from being a big job, you have to keep up with it. In the fall I put a large net over my pond to keep the leaves out. When storms come by, I go out afterwards and clean up any leaves before they sink. Regular bottom cleanings will keep the gunk from getting too deep.

DO some water tests before doing anything. Check your Ph and ammonia mainly for now. Low Ph = less toxic ammonia.
High Ph = more toxic ammonia. So if you have low Ph and ammonia present do not change water out. Only get the leaves out. Then start working with small water changes no more than 20% a week to get things cleaning up. Use amquel to help detoxify ammonia.

Hi cykoed,

You probably can't siphon the muck from the bottom of your pond without a pump unless your pond is above ground level. A pond vacuum is probably your best bet Smile.
