Clear Water Turning Green Can't Post

Hi there everybody,

My pond is about 3 months' old and the water is being filtered through a sand filter, and I've 12 small koi in it.

I clean the filter once in 2 weeks to ensure good water flow. I always use the pond water in cleaning the filter so as not to kill all the bateria that might have grown in the filter. I think I've been pretty lucky that I've been having crystal clear water since day one. I often test the water for amonia and so far there has not been any trace of it. Although I've yet to test the water for things like nitrite, nitrate or things like that, I guess my water is OK as I do see noticeble growth in all my fishes in this short span of time.

Yesterday, I did a 30% change of water and washed the filter in the morning. There was heavy rain in the afternoon. I noticed that the water truned slightly white after the rain. Today I notice that the water has become slightly green but still clear.

I've never experience this before, can anyone tell me if this is normal? Is there anything I must do?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Hi Mark,

I'm from KL. I think my pond is OK now as the water is back to crystal clear. I don't have a test kit for pH yet. I'll get one later.

Thanks anyway.

Water changing from clear to green and back to clear again is definitely common in koi keeping. To use only a sand filter for your koi pond is however not common Smile

Hi Ben,

Thank you for the info. Yes, I agree that it is not common to just use sand filter for koi keeping. I forgot to mention that along with the sand filter, there is also a vege filter. My pond is a small 600 gallon pond. The filtration seems to be working well so far. I will keep watch over it, and needs be I'll improve the filtration system.

Once again, thank you!
