Clear back to green? Can't Post

Strange things, I just built my 1300gal pond its in full sun. The first 3 weeks it was clear then went
green, I knew that would happen I did a 25% water change by dumping my bio-filter (Skippy).

In about 2 weeks in it went crystal clear could see the bottom perfect that lasted about a week
then the bottom was starting to look murky so i did another water change like i did before, but this time
i cleaned the rock on the waterfall doing that the water went really murky.

Waited a few weeks and its still the same, the Skippy started getting really green and then overnight it turned
clear in the skippy all the green went away and the 2 small ponds in the waterfall went crystal clear no green
anywhere not even on the rock, but the pond is still green? if its poring clear water into the pond why isn't the
pond clear? Everything tests good in the pond fish look good the plants are not great though.

Also the night before it went clear there where allot of suds on top, and when i take some media out of
the bio it is like a sponge full of soap. Right now there are still allot of suds on top.

3600gph pump
Pond Size 8 x 8.5 x 2.5
Skippy Filter
Laguna Pressure-Flo 3200 Just arrived not installed yet.

The pressure flow i'm installing today has one in it, but i cant figure out why the bio-filter cleared up but not the pond. Its almost like
its backwards.

The Suds

The water will appear very foamy. This is caused by 'dissolved organic compounds' aka "DOCs", they often occur when a new pond has started and has gone dirty from pollution. Normally, if your biological filter is alive with nitrobacter the water will go from foamy until it clears off in a week or two. This is what has occurred in my ponds personally and yours as well.

I suspect the green you talk about is NOT the actual water being green, but rather the surfaces of the pond and it's liner and rocks. This is a slightly higher form of algae. Under no circumstances should you power blast and rinse every inch of this algae from the pond.

It provides food for your fish, and competes with the microcellular algae that is a cause of the algal bloom.

The plants aren't fairing as well because the biological filter has consumed all nutrients (that were partly to blame for the algal bloom) and left the plants with close to nothing to live on.

Well the water went clear then after i wiped the rocks off it turned verry murky then verry green i cannot see anything
in the pond its been 3 weeks or more and its still verry green but the bio is clear thats what i was confused about. I installed the new filter / UV today so that should get rid of the green water.

I also note that the biological film (which is the same as those that attach and grow inside your biofilter's media) will also be living on your pond surfaces. Wiping them off may have caused a loss of these good bacteria from the pond surfaces that would have caused the water to turn green.

Hey Rusty,
I am using the Skippy filter for my pond and I noticed a huge difference in how well the filter worked and cleared my water when I added air to the filter. I had a fairly decent sized aquarium air pump so I bought a really long air stone at wall mart and some tubing for $8, layed the stone in the bottom and my pond immediately started clearing. Within a week it was crystal clear. Good Luck!

Ok green water gone but now i have string alge. pretty much overnight the hole pond started getting string alge inside it is almost everywhere on the pond liner and a few strands on the rock. the fish eat some of it but the rest i pull out. You can never win with this stuff huh?

All you need do with the 'filamentatious' algae is twist the excess out on the end of a split stick. Before you dump it, leave it in the shallow area of your pond, then watch your Koi dive in and suck out the shrimp and Hog Lice that will abound in it. Filamentateous algae is a very healthy sign in a pond, and plays host to a miriad of small aquatic life forms, so pat yourself on the back for your efforts thus far Wink
