Cloudy Water Can't Post

I have a 600 gallon raised pond which half of it is sheltered buy a very large tree, i am using a Laguna Pressure Flo 12000UVC (Cinister Filter) and also a Oase Filtoclear 11000 (Canister Filter)
with the recommended underwater pumps working together to keep the water nice and clear. (gone a bit overboard with the filtration i know) Both Have UV's as well.
All was working very well, the water was so clear i could have drunk it (ok maybe not)

The filters have been in and working since March with no problems until one morning i notice the water was starting to go very cloudy. I did a water test and the Nitrite levil was 2.0mg/l .
I did a 50% water change on day one and again on day 2 The nitrite levil is .25 mg/l now but the water is still cloudy and thought it would have cleared buy now.

All troubles started as the weather became quite hot this last fortnight.
The temp of the water is 80deg and the fish look very healthy and are feeding ok. Is it the hot weather that is causing the
water to be cloudy ? also considering the filtration i have there is a lot of bits floating around in the water.

I was feeding them 3 times a day but i think was feeding them too much hence the spike in Nitrite?

I have cut the feeding down to twice a day this last week, a small amount in the morning and in the evening.

In the pond i have 4 small koi approx 4 inch & 4 small goldfish.

The water readings are

Ammonia 0.0
Nitrite 0.25
Nitrate 0.0
PH 8.0

Could anyone tell me what i am doing wrong or what i can do to improve the cloudy / bitty water.

HI yes the external canisters are pump fed and bothe of the filters have a 11w UV.

I thought last night i could have flushed all the good bacteria out of the pond when i did the two 50% water changes. At the same time i did backflush both canisters which prob did help[ eighter so i added some Pondcare Bio filter Booster but there is not chnage this morning. Water grey (cloudy) but fish very happy and feeding ok.

Hi Wordley,
Do you have any small/large rocks at the bottom of your pond or maybe leaves in your pond. This may also contribute to your problem.Smile Have you thought about adding another filter???

Jon

I did have some gravel the botom but i did remove all of this as i thought there might be trapped dirt at the bottom , now the bottom of the pond is clean.

The 600 gallons is being pumped through both external canisters every 15 mins. if anything there is to much filtration.

I have added some salt today because of the nitrite problem.

I am sdue to go away on holiday next week so i am hopeing it will clear while iam away.

Hi Wordley,

Any details about your pump??? Or I missed it somewhere. Have a nice trip, and don't worry your koi will survive even with green waterSmile

UnimpressedJust a though, is the tree an oak by any chance. its possible that tanins from the tree may have gotten into your water. Just a thought.

consider this:
1) clean your filter thoroughly.
2) replace your uv bulb
3) add fine mesh to filter out the dissolved organics
