Debris on pond bottom Can't Post

I use a pond vac to clean my (planted) pond as I have no bottom drain - Water parameters are ok but I recently treated blanket weed and seem to have alot of crud and debris on pond bottom - I am worried that this is contributing to the problem of ulcers on my koi (this has affected a couple of my fish) They damage themselves in some way and the sore turns into an ulcer. I am treating pond with stuff to combat aeronomas but feel like this is not working. What is the best thing to eliminate the build up of sludge etc?

Hi Hilly

I am sorry to say you will need to vacume the bottom constantly to fix this problem. Debris will help Ulcers to form and continue to get worst.

I am not a big fan but sludge buster bacterias can help (reportadley).

Hope this helps

There is one possible way to remove crude, and this would involve the fitting of a retrofit bottom drain. Of course this depends on where the settlement chamber is located, and whether the pump takes the pond water in directly, or whether its located afterwards.

The following is an AquaArt retrofit bottom drain

and how the unit installs in the pond, although I am very doubtful of the pipe that runs over the height of the pond water since this means you would need a pump capable of self priming, and be located at the direct input of the bottom drain.

Besides that, I have another idea that would be suitable to liner ponds, involving lowering the pond water level, pulling out a shelf from the liner to create a platform to sit a settlement tank, connected at angles of PVC pipe facing down, and using that pipe as a 'suck up device'.

For more ideas, could we get to know about the pond please?

Two essentials for avoiding 'sludge bottom'!

1) Surface Skimmer - This can be added to one side of the pond, but will require an additional pump, plus a return-to-pond water feature

2) Settlement Tank/Pool - This can be built somewhere above the pond (hopefully), utilising the existing pump (if enough head) and returned via a water feature, preferably over stone.

I once read an old Japanese (translated) Koi book, in which it said; "For water to be pure, it must fall at least four feet over stone!"

FWIW, it's worked for me for years Wink
