Does anyone use an Oasis I-Tronic to stop blanket weed and have Koi in there pond Can't Post

How many of you actually use an I-Tronic ioniser in your KOI ponds to get rid of blanket weed?

These units are advertised on the KOI suppliers internet sites yet there seems to be very little information about there use with KOI. The Oasis web site says it is perfectly safe with all creatures but fish can be effected if salt is used in the pond at the same time as the ioniser, what do you think?.

http://www.oasis-water-gardens.com/itronic.pdf

If you do use it does it work? Just some conformation from a few people would be a start even if you just acknowledge that you do or do not use one.

It seems to me that if this works and can be used carefully by removing salt before use as you would do with formalin then it should be an excellent product to stop blanket weed.

It should also be noted that ionisers are used in swimming pools to replace chlorine and is considered safe for human use.

Any other advice would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Hi Keith,

I don't have this unit in my pond but I have Ioniser in our swimming pool so I can't comment using them in the pond. Sun light causes string algae, have you tried shading your pond???

Jon,

Is it working OK in your pool as I also have been thinking about using one on in my pool?

My pond was surrounded by a forest of conifers but I cut them down so I guess I should expect the algae.

With regard to the Ionisers I am just supprised no one is using them as the koi shops seem to recommend them.

Yes, for about 2 months now and it doesn't work. Even the snails are still thriving !

Hello, I think most of the koi lovers take steps in this hobby, and one of the first steps is buying things that we later see we did not need. And those of us who have big pond generaly make their own filter systems! It is very easy and they work better! There are basic principle behind bio filtration and once these are understood, there is no reason to WASTE money buying something that is so very simple to make! And as a pond owner it is wise to understand all the bio stuff! so hold off on buying things and ask us HOW to make your filter system!
Remember that pools are for people and ponds are for koi, they have different needs and uses!

I am afraid I can not agree, if a new product can do a job then it should be tried and tested, your policy, whilst, it is a probably good and steadfast it is also slow and boring. I like trying new things and look forward to spending a lot of money on new developments. Some of my most useful tools have been brought on that basis. Also, I am very aware of the uses for swimming pools and Koi ponds of which I have both and so far have kept very successfully (no humans have died in my swimming pool).

Keith, Yes it's the Velda It35 marketed by Oasis. It sits there for 12hours a day doing what it does, the Koi are all healthy and so are the snails ! (the instructions say that even small doses of copper minerals are fatal to snails and mussels)

All the water quality readings are o.k. ph, gh, nitrates etc but the blanket weed is still there. The pond is in sunlight all day i have to admit but i have tried all sorts of things to clear it in previous years. I am trying Goodbye blanket weed at the moment and we'll see what that does. see www.velda.com

Hello Keith, I agree that many good things have come from TRYING OUT something, but in this case there is nothing more than the biological proceses happening, and those are what we want to happen. These are to provide a good if not the best and most proficient BREEDING GROUND for ANEROBIC BACTERIA, and it is this bacteria that will keep the water clean. To achieve this, all one must do is provide constant soft running water over and through a good bio media. There are some other details like flow rate ect. but this is the basics to bio filtration. So the way I see things is , it doesnt matter what the name or price is of the product, the question is DOES IT WORK? Here is an example, I could go to a plastics company and buy in BULK a hundred plastic barrels and I can patent a name Like the SUPER DUPER 9000 EXTRA FILTER SYSTEM, now I go and I pay someone to make up a hundred stickers that say the same, and I put these on each barrel. Now there are many people who would start to ask HAS ANYONE USED THE ???? SYSTEM??? You see where I am going??? I am trying to help people not spend money when it is not needed. I am the first to jump to spend money on KOI, but I have learned a little and I hope other do not have to take the same steps. Those being simple buying everything to finaly realize that all I needed was KNOWLEDGE!
