Foamy Water Can't Post

Dear Forum Members:

The water in my pond has been very "foamy" for the past few days. I have been cleaning the filter(undersized) every few days, but did not help. pH and nitrite reading are accetable. I presume the foams are organic-wastes, and they are signs of very poor water quality(and impending doom). What should I do?

Hi
Foams do not necessarily spells DOOM. You're a seasoned guy in this forum and I assumed that all your water parameters are alright.
1)What filter media did you used?
2)Any fish...and behaviour?

Kinda of surprise you asked.

Heard abt bentonite clay?

My other humble opinion at http://www.cyberfins.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000011.html

Yes, I have been experimenting with Bentonite(the cat litter). Each week, have been adding about 50 grams to the pond(about 5 tons). Immediately after adding bentonite, it seemed to help, then becoming foamy against after a few days.

Water parameters are OK, about 130 inches of fish, filter materials are bioballs and fiber matting.....The fish are behaving normally.

A PP treatment will react away all the dissolved organics which form foam in just a few minutes, so I never have this problem since I use PP bombing regularly.

Hi RMT
Nope. KMn04 will not cure all kinds of foamy water. In order for it to work you got to know what cause the foamy water.

If you change 20% of your pond water at least once a week, there is no need to use this stuff.

Hope you find the cause of foamy water in your pond. Good luck.

I had foam till I started using ozone. That stops it dead, and does a lot more besides.

To prevent foaming without any chemical treatment by ozone or others, you have to study your water circulation system. Make sure your water return to pond is circulated on the pond surface before being sucked through the bottom outlet. To achieve this, the angle of return water must be horizontal or down to 45 degree. If the pond is big, split the return water to 2 or more and make the water to circulated in one direction for good mixing or to prevent dead spot. Vertical return water is not so good as it does not mixed well and does not help in water circulation.

There are many alternate cures to foamy water caused by high DOC (Dissolved Organic Carbon). The best way long term is to have so much biofilter capacity that the bacteria eat the DOC and turn it into carbon dioxide. If that is not practical, lower stocking densities (less fish in the same amount of water, or more water for the same amount of fish). The biofilter WILL convert the DOC and stop the foam if it is well enough designed.

Another way to resolve foam is to add a defoamer made specifically for pond use. Many folks go that route.

Regular PP treatment or regular ozone treatment does away with the DOC which causes foam by oxidizing it chemically to carbon dioxide. Again, this is to make up for an inadequate filter design for the stocking level.

Hi,

I haven't seen foam in my pond for a very long time now. Used PP only once in 9 months of my "poorly designed" pond life. All I've been doing is changing water regularly (2~3 times weekly and about 10`15% of water every changes).

3 months ago I built trickle tower of 500 bioballs. Lately, I'm adding kusuri clay to my pond on weekly basis.

As a result, water parameters are good and the kois are growing fast. Even my neighbours are surprise at their rapid growth.

I have similar problem too.

My pond of 21 ton is about 2 weeks old. Filtration consists of 1 standpipes/transfer chamber, 4 40" vortexes and a pump chamber. Japanese filter mat cartridges in 3 of the vortexes.

Foamy water only observed after stocking the pond for a week. Got really bad the last 2 days. The water is crystal clear. Traces of Ammonia found over the last few days.

Anyone knows exactly what's happening? Please advise. Thanks.
