Foamy Water and one dead Koi Can't Post

For the first time in 6 years I now have "foamy" water. I cannot get rid of it and don't know what it is!? Also, one koi died last night and he was a beautiful black/orange and 16 inches. It broke my heart. I have tested the water and everything is fine. What is this foam and is it affecting the fish??

Thank you

What are your water readings in terms of:

*nitrite
*ammonia
*nitrate
*PH

add or delete any where applicable. It's just a bit hard for me to establish a response when "everything is fine" with the water tests.

The foam is most likely dissolved organic compounds (DOCs) that causes the water to have a foamy, almost sticky bubble appearance to them. More often than not, they will start to appear when:

*you filter has suddenly kicked in to remove excess organic compounds from the water itself (that is, the filter has either just begun to work, or is in the process of treating the waste products in the water); or

*there has been another source of increased pollutants in the water.

Questions:
1. When did the foam begin?
2. Have you added any chemicals or treatments in the water?
3. What are your water quality parameters ?
4. Any signs of external damage on your 16 inch koi?
5. Size of pond?
6. Size of filter?
7. Biomedia used?
8. Any UV lights on the filter system?
9. Last time filter was maintained?

Regards,
Ben

Re: [koiguyoz] Foamy Water and one dead Koi [In reply to] Can't Post

The foam began about two weeks after introducing 4 new koi to the pond. The pond is approximately 3 thousand gallons, the water tests check out "right on" and I have not added any new chemicals.

The dead koi had a slight film of a silver/white coating. Then I took him out of the pond and treated him with salt. But my big mistake (non-experienced) was to introduce him to a toxic level of salt (8.4). So in essence, I probably killed him. My hope is that he was on his way out and would have died anyway.

I have another koi who is gasping and took him out and treated him in 3% salt. He has vastly improved.

The filter is relatively new since I have re-dug the pond depth and rinsed out the filter. The foam started to appear after the new fish were added which may have something to do with it. But I am not sure.

Yesterday I purchased something called "Nitrifier" which the salesman said I probably don't have enough in the pond at this time. I tried it and the foam cleared up almost within minutes, but now today it is back.

Someone told me there is a fish "flu".....have you heard of this?

Thank you,
Trulyyoubeads

Hello, well, you have said something important! The filter is new, plus you washed it out, and you have more koi!! Bad combo!!! The gasping for air, plus the other things would lead me to believe thereis a filter problem!!!! How big are the new koi???? And what type of filter system do you have??? You say the problem started about 2 weeks after adding the new koi, that tells me that they may be to much for your filter and it took about 2 weeks for your pond to go bad! There could be other reasons, but these indicaters are not a good combo, so try to check the filtration, adding more bio media and slow down on their feeding and in about 2 weeks you may see a differance, also gasping can indicate that there is not enough oxygen, so!! Let me know if I can help, plus try to send a photo!!

Foamy water - any chance it was a spawning event? Does the water smell terribly like fish? The only time my water turned foamy was when the fish spawned. But it also smelled like every cat in town should be outside my gate wanting inside. Was the fish that died damaged in any way?

I agree with ginkon. The only time I had foamy water was after my fish laid a huge batch of eggs and spawn. This {I think} began to rot and caused bacteria to skyrocket. The water turned milky and foamed. I did a water change and increased my aeration with a bubbler. Introduction of the new fish might have triggered a spawning event. Did you notice if they had been very active or had torn fins? Check for ammonia and a strong fishy smell.

Hi There,

I have changed the water daily approximately 15 - 20% for a week. Things are looking much better. My problem was that I had the uptake line on the side of the pond instead of the middle and the waste wasn't being picked up. This weekend I reconfigured the uptake and put it in the middle and in less than a week, my pond is almost perfectly clear!

Thanks,
Trulyyoubeads (Rosanne)
