Frequency of Bio-filter cleaning Can't Post

How often should the bio-filter be cleaned and what are the dangers of reducing or depleting the colonies of beneficial bacterias each time it's being cleaned?
There have been many different views on cleaninig of bio-filter by koi keepers. Maybe our Sifus can share their experience.

Re: [vincent5] Frequency of Bio-filter cleaning [In reply to] Can't Post

hi vincent,

for me, after using bakki shower and bacteria hse, i never touch my bio filter.. i used to use izeki net ( or carl net) for my system, i clean them every week coz they clog up easily..

this is my opinion, u shud clean ur bio filter when it is clog up, coz the bacteria wont work anyway when they clog up.
usually i will stop feeding my koi a day or two b4 cleaning the filter, then will resume feeding after a few days after the cleaning. i use pond water to rinse the nets.

good luck

Thanks kit. I use brushes in the settlement chamber but I find them not so effective in trapping fine particles. Is the Izeki Net better and where do you place them.

Rgds.

Hi vincent,

i dont use the izeki net anymore. i used to put them hanging in all the chamber. well, they too not good when come to trap fine particles. the best is to use sand filter if u want to trap fine particles, but again, the sand clog very very fast.

another alternative is to use fine sponge, again, they clog really fast. Nowadays even in japan, hobbyist hardly use fine sponge, people focus more on biological filter than mechanical filter.. Mechanical need lots of attention..

i think you should clean ur bio filters i.e. every 2 months or every 3 months ( fixed the time to wash ), for me, normally i will completely wash the bio filter when maintenance is done, after the service, i will pour Bio Zyme or PSB ( Photo Synthetic Bacteria ) in the pond, these enzymes will help in getting the useful bacteria growth in ur pond, so , i hope my suggestions help... thanks....

I clean the brushes on a weekly basis and the biofilter every 3 months. I think it is important that the biofilter is kept clean and free from sludge as much as possible and also that the bio-media is washed in pond water. Using tap water to clean the bio-media can be harmful as it contains chlorine that destroys the good bacteria.
A day after cleaning the biofilter, I would do a water quality test for ammonia, NO2 & NO3. I find that the water quality remains good and stable as before and the water quality parameters does not seem affected by the cleaning, if done the proper way.

Regards.
