Green string algae problem Can't Post

I have quite a bit of string algae growing from the bottom of my pond. I am sweeping the bottom of the pond weekly and scooping it off of teh surface to try and get rid of it but, with the warm weather we've been having lately, it grows back within a week.

My bio-filter has been up and running for approx 10 days. My UV light is working at full strength. My first incling is to let the bacteria build up in the filter system. The second is to by a product called "Green Clear" to clean thngs up. I'm not a bg fan of chemicals and would prefer to try oter methods before going that route.

I appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks!

Hi Sansebastian,

First, is your pond in full sun??? Providing some shades will reduce the string algae growth. Your biofilter is still imature coz its only 10days old, beneficial bacteria start growing(kicking off) around 4 to 6 weeks. Feed you koi a few pellets per day and check you water parameters specially ammonia, make sure its within acceptable level or zeroSmile Your pond is going thru the "new pond syndrome", so give it time and enjoy the hobbySmile

Some ppl use toilet brush to remove the string algae and they say not bad for $2 toolTongueWink

Jon,

I was in the pond with my waders and a shop broom trying to loosen up some of the algae. It worked...kind of. Dollars to donuts I'll be out there again tomorrow sliding around my pond trying to loosen that stuff up. By the way, I am backflushing a lot of the stinky green solids out of the filter every other day. I hope this does not slow down the process of developing healthy bacteria. Any thoughts on this?

90% of the pond receives full sun. There is a small portion that is shaded throughout the day. My fish love that spot until I come home and feed them.

I feed the four fish I have approx. 1/4 a cup of Hikari Gold daily. That's probablty too much but they gobble each serving up in a few ferenzied seconds. It will be easy to cut the amount I feed them down if that will improve the water quality and the health of my fish. I have not checked the water levels for a week or so. I'll take a reading tomorrow.

I check the clarity of the water daily and am delighted to see that things are clearing up. I guess it will take some time before the system is actually set and stable. In the meantime, I'll sit back and relax knowing that I am slowly getting the right track.

Thanks again.

The green stuff could be you koi poop or sludge which must be removed for better water quality, IMHO

You may have to add a bit more shade to control your algae probs

Take it easy with the food, too much will give you ammonia spike coz your filter is still new and no beneficial bacteria to process the waste. And if I were you I'll check the water parameters asap.

The system takes a while to fully mature, once you're there its all a matter of good maintenence like regular flashing of filters, checking water parameters, etc. What your koi behavior, they'll be the first one to tell you that you have water quality issuesSmile

Jon
