Hi Marcus: My new pond(about one month old) is outdoor, and has direct sunlight about 95%, its water is VERY green. I am in the process of trying to find out for myself about the benefits of green water(I have kois ranging from 2-8 inches in length). About the effects on oxygen level, that is a possibility, but I did not see my kois grasping at the surface in the morning(and pH did not crash). What I have observed so far(after three weeks) are: 1) the red color is brighter, and the white background is much improved(could be my imagination here), and the sumi improves with small sumi-markings disappeared. 2) the kois seem to have problems seeing floating pellet foods. 3) the kois become less tame(during feeding time). Now they just grabbed the pellets and dashed down to hide instead of staying at the surface. One BIG drawback of green water is that I could not observe the kois, except during feeding. So if they were sick, hiding at bottom, etc, there is no way of finding out. To help with oxygenation, I have added a small water fountain, and I DEFINITELY is planning to provide shading for my pond, in a month or so, once I finish with the green water experiment. Regards, Bancherd
