Dear Samonielle Topic: Growing, body shape & colour Several conditions are important for good Koi keeping. Good advice is given by Hans Ham. Referring to colours, I would like to add one thing to that. Koi colours can fade away. Not always is this a matter of "poor" accommodation. Body shape and especially colour and colour pattern are bloodline dependent. There are Koi's which are extremely beautiful at buying. Then gradually the quality is fading away. People buy Koi for a certain reason; just for fun and therefor Koi should not be expensive, or sometimes one can afford more or, one can buy top quality Tategoi. "Tategoi", as you probably know, are expensive Koi which, in the future will reach it's top and thereafter will loose some of it quality. Do not forget that the most Koi we buy are of common quality or in the better case (higher price class), what is called "Tateshita". Tateshita's are Koi which have passed several cullings but at the end will never become "tategoi". So, we cannot expect these Koi to become better. The only direction for them is backwards in quality. If Koi are from "poor" or "lower" bloodlines, they also will never become future beauties. So, the advise is, whenever affordable, buy Koi when future potentials to become better. Only then we can enjoy them more and more for years to come. I know this a very difficult matter as we, as beginners, do not know where to look at. We therefor should look for a reliable Koi dealer. Kind regards and a lot of Koi pleasure. How is your new pond progressing? I hope you have installed the "mushroom" bottomdrain. This is , as Hans is mentioning a "must" Mirto
