Growing, body shape & colour Can't Post

I have some koi (abt 5") and they cannot grow well after 2 years, they're so fat and only add 1 inch for 2 years.
The colour is to fade, altough I feed with carrots, beans, cabbage and "fish food", they're so lazy and always stay in the corner of the pond.
I ever buy "fish food" that contain 25% spirulina, and the colour not really changed.
What's the problem ?.
What can I do to change the bad body shape to be good ?
my pond is B shape 2.7m X 1.3 X 0.5 m and fill the water at 0.3m height. With no stream , waterfall and filtration. Just only aerator four outlets

Thank's a lot, I need help for this case

I think it is due to the water is to shallow. I think we need at least 4 feet deep for the koi to grow to be longer.

Just like human, we eat a lot and not enough exercise then we become 'big-bellied'. But if we eat a lot and do more exercise then our muscle will look beautiful instead of all the lagging bodypart with a lot of fat...

Just my opinion.

Thanks

Perhap it is due to the bloodline of the koi.

Hallo Samonielle!
I have to say to you that your pond is out of order to keep koiin it.
Here are some basic Requirements of a koi pond.
1)one bottom drain per 9.3m surface area or 3000 gal.=13600l water
2)volume of filter material not less 10-15% of pond or 30% of surface area.
3)min. surface area =11m /min. depth =5 ft./min. vol.9000l.
4)max. stocking rate -0.42m water for every 30cm.(12")of fish body not including the tail.
5)water returns: waterfall/watercourse/venturi/spray bar/or a simply "Hi Blow"
6)Other key equipment/ skimmer,uv.,sand press.filter ,trickle tower,and uniring.
7)Settlement chamber fed by the bottom drain,or forced removal of dirt with air pump and uniring with timer on pump.To remove the waste at regular intervals timer operates at one minute at preset intervals.

Thats my opinion of a koi pond ,to make the koi groh big .

Hi Hans,

I've been to Vienna and Salzburg myself last summer. It was a breathtaking view. I felt like looking to a postcard. I'm talking about the view on the highway from Italy to Salzburg. Still got a lot of photo.

Anyway, tomorrow we will start building a new
pond. This time the size is 5'x 6'x 4'. The filter surface area is about 28% of total pond surface. What's on my mind for a few days is about the bottom drain. I've read in 'koi cymru' website. There is a picture of a mushroom like bottom drain. Have anyone use this kind of bottom drain. Where can I get one in Malaysia? What kind do you use?

One more thing is the skimmer. Do I have to have dedicated motor for it?

Thanks

Hallo Rahim!
There Mushroom bottom drain works very good,
Remember a bottom drain is a must for a koi pond.I Have installed bottom drains on several ponds,i wuld nbot build a pond with out it.A skimmer with a motor behind is exelent, but it works with out it also ,of cours not so good .It seems your pond size is a bit small ,if possible make it bigger ,and make the depth 5 ft.
PS.see Dealers Directory for bottom drain
see Arowana Aquarium,Cheras Aquarium, and Zen Watergarden Regards Hans

Regards Hans

Dear Samonielle
Topic: Growing, body shape & colour

Several conditions are important for good Koi keeping. Good advice is given by Hans Ham.
Referring to colours, I would like to add one thing to that.
Koi colours can fade away. Not always is this a matter of "poor" accommodation.
Body shape and especially colour and colour pattern are bloodline dependent. There are Koi's which are extremely beautiful at buying. Then gradually the quality is fading away. People buy Koi for a certain reason; just for fun and therefor Koi should not be expensive, or sometimes one can afford more or, one can buy top quality Tategoi. "Tategoi", as you probably know, are expensive Koi which, in the future will reach it's top and thereafter will loose some of it quality.
Do not forget that the most Koi we buy are of common quality or in the better case (higher price class), what is called "Tateshita". Tateshita's are Koi which have passed several cullings but at the end will never become "tategoi". So, we cannot expect these Koi to become better. The only direction for them is backwards in quality.
If Koi are from "poor" or "lower" bloodlines, they also will never become future beauties.
So, the advise is, whenever affordable, buy Koi when future potentials to become better. Only then we can enjoy them more and more for years to come. I know this a very difficult matter as we, as beginners, do not know where to look at. We therefor should look for a reliable Koi dealer.
Kind regards and a lot of Koi pleasure.
How is your new pond progressing? I hope you have installed the "mushroom" bottomdrain. This is , as Hans is mentioning a "must"
Mirto
