Help!! New pond owner

Can't Post

Hi All, I just got a new house that has a pond in the yard. The pond setup has a pump, extracting water from underneath the pond and a skimmer and pumps it high and lets it flow down in a waterfall. There is a swimming pool sand filter that can intercept the flow of water to clean the water when it looks dirty. The pond has some Koi and goldfish and also some water lily in it. My problem is that the water has quite a lot of algae bits in it and so it is quite cloudy. I would like some suggestions as to how to clear the pond up. Some suggestions I have heard and my questions related to them: 1) Install UV filter in line with the pump: This will kill the algae and make the pond water clear. But does it cause problems as the algae is no longer there to get rid of the nitrates. Will the water become toxic to the fish? 2) Add some agent into the water that will destroy the algae. I have seen quite a few products that does that. Any suggestions which one is most effective. I would also like to make sure it does not kill the water lily. 3) Add ionizer bar. I have seen one that just ionizes and one copper bar. Seems like a few people have reservations on the copper bar. Anybody have experience with any ionizer. 4) Introduce bacteria or organisms that eat up the algae. Which product is most effective. Since the pond is fairly old, there is a lot of algae also on the side of the pond. Any suggestions what can get rid of those. Thanks in advance on your help. Hubert
