Help! Koi lying on its side! [In reply to] Can't Post

How do I build a trickle tower? Could I just add some green matting on the top of my sand/gravel barrel filter and add bacteria? I put a bid on a bio/mechanical/uv filter on ebay for a 6,000 gallon pond last night. Plan to put that in line with my barrel filter, I'm assuming I should install this after the barrel and not before? Again, can the salt be plain farm salt or is pond salt special? How much salt should I add? Sun is on the water 50-70% of the time, no plants as I wanted to only have koi. Pond has been running since May, I have about 13 koi, ranging in size from 8-24 inches. I also seem to have had a spawn recently as lots of little minnows everywhere. Pond is 5 feet at the deepest, 3 feet at the shallowest, long and skinny with a big waterfall coming out of the barrel. Pump puts out about 2,000 gallons an hour. I will admit I was only doing a water change about once a month or less, not knowing it was necessary, but the fish have flourished until the algae chemical I mistakenly tried this week. I assume that with the extreme heat we get in the summer in Oklahoma that I will not be able to keep the algae down without a UV filter and I've noticed all the big places I've visited have used them with crystal clear water. Do I need to continue weekly 20% changes with this setup once the pond matures and the algae dies down, temperatures gets lower? My water temp is now in the 70sF. Thanks, this is a great forum, glad I found it before it was too late!!!!!

One last question? What is causing the foam? It is much better since all the water changes but it started BEFORE the algae chemical so I don't think it's related. By the way, have changed 20% water X 3 days and this morning just did a 50% change. Haven't seen the koi yet, they are still not coming up when I put a couple of feed pellets on top but at least they aren't all hanging in the corner like they were 3 days ago gasping for air!! Should I withold feed for a week or two? When should I do another water change and how much?

Hi Tracy,

Some pictures and diagram on the Trickle Tower

The trickle tower can be built with either using 12" PVC pipe as shown in the first diagram above or use a combination of trays to let the water trickle down slowly.

Hi Tracy,

Right here in Malaysia, my pond is totally without any shade and subjected to full year sunshine. We keep our water clear and big filter and a trickle tower with primary objective to deprive the algae of the food that is need to prosper, the Nitrate. To kill the algae using chemical is one of the way but is definitely not the best way. Removing nitrate mean that you go to the root of the problem.

Please also watch out when you use substantial chemical to kill a lot of algae. The death algae will decay and contribute a lot of bio load to your filter. In the event that your filter is not able to cope, the value of ammonia, nitrite will escalate and is very fatal. Hence please peform water test ASAP and change water when necessary.

Ok, I'm confused. Does the water go in the top and come out the bottom? Would one tower of 12 " PVC be enough for my pond? How tall should I make it? Should it be before or after my mechanical filter?? I'm buying another pump to run a skimmer box, could I just make a large box for the skimmer and fill it with the bubble beads instead? How big of box and how many beads? Would that work? Or would it be better to go through the skimmer box and than into a trickle tower, than back into the pond? Can the tower be horizontal so I could hide it under the porch? How would I attach the 1 1/2 PVC inlet and outlets to it if I use the 12" PVC style? I will never again use copper sulfate to remove algae but I have put an ebay bid on a bio/mechanical/uv filter on ebay which I was going to hook up in line with my barrel filter. Would you hook that filter before or after the barrel filter? It is a gravel, sand filter so I assume it is mainly mechanical. The new pump I ordered will move 2500 gph, same as the one I already have so I have a few available options on how to configure this. In the meantime, would you recommend I continue to do daily water changes until the fish get more active? I did a 50% one today. Would you do another 50% tomorrow or give it a couple days? The foam seems to be getting much better but not completely gone. Fish aren't hanging on the top but also not coming up when I throw a couple food pellets in. I haven't seen them in two days since the water is still completely green. Thanks, this is a great forum!

OK, did another 50% change today, still haven't seen my koi, they still won't come up to check out a couple food pellets. Paramters are ph 7.5, 0 ammonia, .25ppm or less nitrite. Could it still be the copper sulfate I put in for the algae causing them to not act normal? I guess in a way it's good I haven't seen them, at least their not floating or hanging on the top anymore but sure would like if they started acting normal again. The algae is still pea green and the minnows still seem to be active on top. HELP!!!!

TonyG,

So you use biohome instead of bioball in TT. How tall is your TT? I just bought a bag of biohome and it costed me S$45. I would imagine if you are going to fill a TT of 2ft with biohome, the price will be enormous. BTW, what is the design of your TT? DIY? what material do you use to construct the TT?

Thanks,
Patrick

Hi Patrick

Yes, i used biohome for my firstTT. As i change to a bigger TT, now i mix it together with fiter mat and bioball. Mine is a DIY TT and its about 60cm tall. I buit it using the comercially found CD rack. As my tank is 5ft FG tank, this suit me perfectly.

The CD rack has 4 compartments / drawers if you may call it. The top or 1st compartment, i drill holes to fit a spray bar to it and i also put filter mat in it. 2nd compartment is where my biohome is. 3rd and last compartment is where i place all the bioballs. I fix a PVC pipe to the last compartment for the water to flow back to the tank. In between each compartment, i drill lots of small holes to allows the water to tickles into the next compartment.

I will try to post a picture sometime this week.

Tony

Hi Tracy!

Whats brand of Copper Sulfate did you put into your Pond? I tried using that last time, but it doesn't hurt that much. When i put it on the morning, they kois won't eat the food, and after 5 to 6 hours,on afternoon or evening, they will start to search for food! I think it won't hurt that much! Did you over used it?

Hope you can figure it out soon!

John
