Help! Odor and clarity! Can't Post

We just started a small outside Koi pond this year so I really don't know what I doing yet. We had about 6 fish in a 150 gallon pond outside. I live in Wisconsin and we had to bring the fish in earlier than I expected and I didn't know what to do with them. They are now in about 40 gallons, and I'm sure its too small. The've been in there less than 48 hours -- the water has become very murky and there is now a very bad smell. How many fish can I actually have in there? What should I do about the smell/clarity? What do I do with the other fish?

This is a bad situation, but here is the best thing for the moment. Make sure you have plenty of aeration in the small tank they are in. You will need to do at least one water change per day(1/2 in the morning, 1/2 in the evening) with dechlorinated water. Absolutely do not feed them for now. The smell is mostly ammonia from decaying feces/food. Koi also produce ammonia from breathing, so the daily water changes will be needed even while not feeding.
6 Koi of any size it too much for 40 gallons of water, so you need to find something bigger asap.
Do you have any kind of filter running on the small tank? Can you move the pond filter inside to use during winter? Tell us as much as you can about what you have and how big the fish are so we can help you better.

Given constraints of space etc I'm imagining that there's no way I'll be able to keep most of the fish. How many could reasonably live in 40 gallons? I'll check how big they are when I get home from work. What about the ones I can't keep--are there places that would either store or buy my fish from me?

TIP

When you've moved the fish from the outdoors to the indoors, you can always use the media from the filter outside to the filter that is located for the indoor tank/pond. I'd recommend you take no more than 15 minutes between the time you take the media out from the outside pond filter to the inside tank/pond filter. This is to ensure you keep a healthy population of good bacteria for running the inside pond/tank filter.

You can get a kiddy pool that holds approx 300gal to 400gal. It will not take too much space. If you have a basement you should be able to fit one of this...............just a thoughtWink good luck anyway.
