Help on my TT! WITH a diagram! Can't Post

Okay so im planning on making a DIY filter for a 100 gallon, maybe 200 but its gonna be around 100-150 gallon. There are gonna be about 3-4 small kois for now (i move them to my grandma's pond when they get bigger) so over stocking isn't really a problem in my pond, so i dont need a super hefty filtration system. here is what i have so far

is that even a tickle tower? or a drum thingy? should the holes be bigger at top or bottom? any input would be great!
also, the two holes for water to come out.. what can i add to make it like shoot out so that it makes a water fall on my rocks? (instead of it just dripping out and going everywhere)

Hi Le,

As long as the unit has enough gas exchange it should workSmile Make the holes on each pot smaller first, you can enlarge some of them if they're too small. Make yourself a spray bar or similar so you can utilise the top pot by adding more media. Depend on the pump capacity but you can have 2 x 50mm pipe outlets on the bottom potWink

okay nvm haha, i figured out what a spray bar is.. how do u make one though? do u just connect it to the tube that connects to ur pump? i have one more question, how does all these keep the water from going green? thankyou everyone!

Hi Le,

how would i know if they are too small?
The top pot will overflow so you'll need to make some holes bigger ustil the desired flow is achieve.
how would one know if there is enough gas exchange?
The water trickling down from one pot to another pot should have enough space.
i figured out what a spray bar is.. how do u make one though?
Since this is a small version of TT you can just get a small piece of pipe maybe 32mm or 1.5in. You then drill holes on the half side only of the pipe. Again small holes first(enlarge it later if need be for better flow) Place it to top pot. Do I make senseCrazy
how does all these keep the water from going green?
If your surface area in your TT is larger the required your water might have a tint of green or otherwise clear water. But before you achieve that your pond will suffer what we call "new pond syndrome". Good bacteria will take at least 4 to 6 weeks to start maturing.

Jon

Thankyou SOoo much koi38! so if i start to see the pond turn green and can't see the fish its alright... right? i mean they wont die or anything? (i would have to check the water parameters ) but its GOING to get dirty first then clear up later? do i need to change any of the water while its in the new tank syndrom? what i have here is indeed a true trickle system right? And my LAST question regarding this is.... what do u mean by enough space? how much space should there be between one pot and the one below it? thankyou!

Hi Le,

Once your biofilter start maturing your water should clear up and of course keep testing the water and feed few pellets per day. This will help the filter too. No need to do partial water change, IMHO coz the pond is still new unless something has gone wrong. As long long as the water touches the air should be enough. Yes yours is a true TT in a small scaleWink

Hi,

This might give you a different idea to construct a TT.

This is perhaps the simplest TT that one could made - an open Jap-Mat TT.

A small power-head is used to pump the filtered water up a centrally located a pvc pipe (in the core of the roll of Jap-Mat, over 1 m tall). The water exits into the blue plastic container (with many holes) and showers down and back into the pond. The TT is hung up at the top end of the pvc pipe.
There is plenty of air exchanges as the TT is open. Has been working well and have not cleaned it since it was installed over 2 years ago. Some ferns have started growing on the matt now (this is an old photo).

cheers

In Malaysia, one could find the Jap mat in most aquarium shops.

Don't know where you could get it in CanadaUnsure. Maybe your local koi hobbyists or koi club could help.

cheers.
