Help suggest further clarifying water Can't Post

so far our pond in Boracay is now running smoothly, the water has gone from green to smokey clear water, my DH is not overly satisfied with this cloudy water, what do we need to do to make the water clear up completely? Should we add a sand filter? what kind and how big a sand filter should I get - any suggestion on brand?

Thanks Wink

Hi,

I would reccond a protien skimmer of such like a turbo cleaner. This not only help reduce Ammonia, Nitrites and Nitrates abut it will also give the water a nice polish.

Hi Stuart/Chingbee

I was about to recommend the protein skimmer to chingbee when she asked for help but since I have not used it before but only read from this forum, I wasn't sure if it would be good to clear the water!

Now that you have mentioned it, I guess chingbee should consider getting this skimmer if you want to see crystal clear water!Smile

Hi Stuart - I have no problem with ammonia, nitrite and nitrate - they are all 0 readings.

Which one do you think is best? having Sand Filter or Turbo Cleaner?

Hi chingbee

Turbo cleaner is a better option because it not only turn the water crystal clear it also removes DOC from your pond!Smile

Moreoever, I hear that sand filter tends to get clog easily and the maintenance work is more.Crazy

Let us know the results after using the turbo cleaner.

My pond is about 10,000 gallons - will the G65 do well on it? I can't find any turbo cleaner here in the Philippines, but there are sand filter available here, no problem with backwashing as we have lots of helpers to do that for us. We don't have to clean the pond by ourselves.

If all people here would vote for the turbo cleaner, then I must order it via internet. Unsure

Hi Chingbee,

I would say that a G65 turbo cleaner would be ok for your pond. The G20 is anything up to 2,000 gal although people still use these on much bigger ponds and find that they work just as well. The G65 is anything up to 8,000 gal, but again this will still do the job without a problem. The Recommended gallonage is based upon useing the turbo cleaner as you only filter (not sure who they work that out), so to be honest I do not listen to the reccomendations of these turbo cleaners, I just know that my G65 makes the water crystal clear and that's all that is important to me.

Stuart,

Since it is a bit inconvenient for me to have to order tru internet the Turbo Cleaner and have to wait several months for it to arrive here - if I just use a sand filter, do you think it would clear up my water just fine? I have never seen a sand filter before and I don't know also how it clarifies the water, but have seen it only in video's of Living Jewels. Most of them uses sand filter and have not seen any of the pond using Turbo Cleaner - why is that?

Ok the living jewel vidoe's (all 10 parts) were made a very long time ago. The idea of protein skimmers has only been around for a short time in comparision to sand filters. I suppose that as new inventions and new technologies become available people move on.

I can imagine that in 10 years time over 50% of all new ponds will be built with "the answer" incorperated in the mechanical filter, and brushes and nets will be a thing of the past.

I can not really comment much on the sand filters as I have never used one and don't know of anyone who has. Maybe someone else would be able to give you their opinion.

Hi Chingbee,

I don't know anything about the Turbo cleaner but can tell you that my sand filter does not clear my pond the way I would like it. It does do a good job and would work better if I had skimmers.

By the way, I have a friend here in California,USA that is from your country, she had never seen koi before. She asked me if I grew them to eat. I explained to her that koi would be a very expensive dinnerWink

Re: [Lynne USA] Help suggest further clarifying water [In reply to] Can't Post

U know what Lynne? We do eat kois in this part of the world. In fact there's a Chinese delicasy of raw koi meat (kinda like japanese sashimi Wink) which is eaten around the Lunar New Year (aka Chinese New Year). It's called "Yu-Sang" (literally means raw fish). These days the fish might be a whole lot of different types of raw fish (salmon, tuna etc.), but the original ingredient was koi (or carp) meat. Blush

... just thought I'd let u know that ppl do eat kois.... expensive as u think they may be. (OK, we don't eat those kois with 3figure price digits attached to them because they're pretty, but kois are carp and carp have been farmed as food fish in this part of the world a long time.) Smile

Lynne - there are a lot in our country who do not know anything about koi, well, some have heard of carp but not koi. I do have to explain to them that koi is a fancy carp Crazy Still they don't seem to appreciate it as much as I do Tongue

I have placed my order of a turbo cleaner and they are still awaiting for my confirmation with the order coz the shipping alone would take about UK50.00 Frown That is so expensive!!

Lynne,

I believe its a new invention from Germany known as Febi Turbo Cleaner - it would acts like a sand filter and at the same time also a protein skimmer - eliminates algae and unsighty foam on the surface of your pond.

Stuart and Dr Tan has it in their pond, and both says it really helps to further clarify the water.

I will order it at koicarp.net - check it out in their website.

Hi Lynne, here's a picture of the febi TurboCleaner (protein skimmer) that I own.Smile The hose is the water inlet from the last stage of filtration. The PVC pipe on the right drains away the scumb collected into a vertical PVC outlet. The black pipe on the left is the outlet for water that is free from proteins. This goes to the veggie filter as shown in the picture.
Always friendly :)

 Hi dttk and Dr Tan,

I read the information on the thread you posted. The pond that I will be building in a few months will be from 18,000 to 20,000 US gallons, would I need 2 of the large units? Is the febe unit available here is the USA.

Hi lynne,

Errr... dttk and Dr. Tan are the smae person a bit like clarke kent and superman Cool.

To be honest I woul dstill only have he one turbo cleaner. althougth they recomend up to 8,000 gal for the G65. I hav eheard of people using the G20 (2,000 gal max ) for ponds of 6,000 gal with excellent results.

Try one, if you need another then you can buy one, but you may be looking at aroung $500 for a G65 in the states. As for suppliers you could try koicarp.net to see if they ship to the US. Speak to Trevor Pearson and mention my name. He should be able to give you a price including shipping.
