High Ammonia, Nitrate 0, Nitrite 0 Can't Post

Hi sifu.....

Recently i got a fg tank measure 3 x 2 x 2. it comes with a filterbox.
The filterbox contain 4 compartment and i had setup in such way

compartment 1 = fill with Jap mesh and cotton to trap heavy dirt.
2nd compartment = i fill up with Lava rock at the bottom and ontop i fill with Bacteria House
3rd compartment = all is Bacteria House media. Total of Bacteria House is 4 KG

The things that puzzle me is the ammonia reading is very high around 4 to 5 ppm. I tested the water with the test strip and here is the result

PH : 7.6
NO3 : 0
NO2 : 0
KH : 6
GH : <3

I even added the Biozyme to kick start the filter. But still the ammonia is high......not even reduce abit and also i tried the bacteria seeding still the ammonia is high. Partial water change also does not help. Does this mean that the good bacteria is not alive yet to convert the ammonia? and therefore my NO2 and NO3 is zero reading. By the way the UV light is on. The color of the Bacteria House media is slightly green and some are a bit brownish.

The two compartment that houses the Bacteria House media and Lava rock got aeration.

How do i know my filter is working? i mean the good bacteria is alive and multiplying?

FYI : i got 6 kois. 1 is 12 inch long and the rest is 4 inch long.

any idea sifu....

thanks

Koiluv

Koiluv,

It takes 6 to 8 weeks for the biofilter to kick off. Only feed a few pellets per day to give your filter a chance to its job. Turn your UV off until water turn a little green then you can it back on. Once you've detected NO3, is means your biofilter has startedSmile

Koiluv,

I've never try any chemicals to speed things up in biofilter when I started my pond. I let mine kicked off in natural waySmile

Maybe someone will chime in to share their experienced with BiozymeWink

Hi koiluv..

these are the things u can do to reduce ammonia..

1.reduce feeding
2.use zeolite (cannot use with salt)
3.use super clean c (fermentation process, absord ammonia)
4.partial water changes
5.reduce ur stock (less koi produce less waste),
6. apply onitaiji, refresh etc (all clay base), and
7.wait till ur filter mature..

Hello, It sounds like you need some help! Let your water get dirty!! That will give the Bacteria something to live off! There are some things that dont fit!.,, First of all, the Jap, Mat, is to give a good place for the the good bacteria! It also filters, but it can be better used!!! The concept of a VORTEX is prudent!!! This should be placed in the first chamber!!! This will collect all the shit! Therefore elininating the use of the Jap. Mat! The rest of your system is cool! Lava Rock can be a bitch to clean!!! And that is why we Koi Keepers try to stay away from that ! It weighs alot and is simple a bitch! Remember it is not the weight, but the space that your bio-media gives which filters!! There are many other things which give a GREAT enviroment for bacteria to grow! And they weigh less! Thus easier to clean!!! send me some pics! I may be able to help you more!
Jim
