High Ammonia, high Nitrite Can't Post

I've got a pond system with 3 ponds connected by a steam. Total volume is 2500 gal. There is about 25 ft. of stream and a 5' long waterfall. The filter is a 60 gal. barrel filled with lava rock. I am pumping approx 1200 gph.
The reason for this letter is Im concerned about some tests I performed today. My PH is 7.0, Ammonia is 0.20, Nitrite is 5.0, and the salt content is 0.06%.
I don't know what my levels have been in the past(new test kit), but in the last month I've treated the pond with Formilin as I had some parisites working.
The pond system is 1.25 years old. I have 10 koi in the upper(largest) pond and 5 Goldfish in the lower pond. I have a number of plants, consisting of Lilys and rushes and grasses and many others. All seem to be happy.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreaciated.

your filter is too small .You should have a mechanical filter about 150 gals or larger follow by a biofilter .

It is obvious that your pond is not supported by proper water filter system.

In short, you need a prefilter which act as a mechanical filter aim to remove solid waste. This shall follow by a biological filter that will serve as a home for all beneficial bacteria. These bacteria will convert ammonia to nitrite and then to nitrate. By rule of thumb, the size of the bio filter should normally be 30% of the surface are of the pond.

A good prefilter will ensure that your bio filter will not clog.

Dear scott

I do agree with other guys comment, but I think it also depend on several things, such as the size of your fish, the amount of food that you gave to them, etc.

Just to remind, It might be wise to prime your filter bug again as you said that you treated the pond with formalin (that will kill the bugs in your filter for sure).
