High Ph, or Bad Reading? Can't Post

Hi
The koi are finally moving around up here, so I started checking the water quality again. For some reason, the Ph reading was about 9. Last fall we added enough baking soda to bring the Ph up to about 7.8. How do you explain such a ridiculous rise in Ph over the winter? Could it be that the reagents in the test kit need warmer water?
A couple of the natural rocks from the waterfall fell into the pond in the winter; could the minerals in the rock have caused the rise in Ph?
Thanks

A few potential causes:

*Reagents are old and inaccurate (buy an eletronic PH meter instead - I use one and they can measure PH from 0-14 );
*The rocks - depends on their composition; or
* New water from rain or snow.
