How Much Oyster Shell Can't Post

It has been sugested that oyster shell be added to the filter chamber as a buffer. Just how much? Some say you can't use too much, and a few said use caution. The average answer was 1 Lb per 100 gallons, but know one convinced me they really knew. My Pond is always in the sun, but have alot of plants & Lillies for fish shade. The PH is always on the high side (8.7-9), so im trying to prevent swings and having to contiously add BS. Any suggestions?

Re: [gkurtz] How Much Oyster Shell [In reply to] Can't Post

hi,
its relative really, no exact answer because ALL PONDS ARE DIFFERENT. oyster shells/corals/ even to a certain degree some calcium based bio chips act as buffer IE increasing kH/alkalinity. what the value means is it protects your water from crashing to acid. higher kH, more buffer from droppind pH. from the likes of it, your pond needs a lower pH!! so dont put too many shells, in fact remove all together!! try target pH 7-8.

just to share, rain in japan is quite acidic and when it rains they quickly rush dumping shells in the mud ponds. i guess they dont constantly keep it in he pond because shells makes water harder- not suitable for koi growth...
