How To reduce Nitrates?? Can't Post

Hi..
I'm newbie in koi keeping.need information from experts here..

I read many times about nitrogen cycle which convert amonia to nitrites and nitrites to nitrates.
Though Nitrates is harmless but said with certain level can be dangerous.
My question is, how to reduce nitrates beside do water changes?
Some people said TT can reduce nitrate.
I have cascading water fall, will it function like TT for it has large surface area of water also and go down slowly?

rgds,
teddy

Hi Teddy,

From my understanding, I have read that 3 items will reduce Nitrate :-

1) Regular water changes which you yourself has high-lighted.
2) Installing a Trickle Tower or Bakki Shower which is believed to reduce Nitrate in the de-gassing process.
3) Introducing a Vege Filter where the plants and algae will thrive on the Nitrate which is their plant's food
( fertilizer ).
Please make sure that you have to constantly look after the plants and get-rid off all dead leaves, roots
etc. becos' if not, it will encourage the growth of parasites which will cause more problem to your koi.
I can't make comment on your cascading waterfall becos' I have not read or heard from any hobbyists
here that installing waterfall can reduce nitrate. Hopefully, someone who are more experience may
provide the answer.

Best Regards,
Thiam Hwa

Hello, try to remember that a trickle tower is great!! But what we are realy doing is providing a SURFICE in whick the bacteria can cling to, and start to colonize! As well as providing alot of oxygen , THE TRICKLE TOWER!! now, a water fall, can also give the same needs to the bacteria, you have the running water ( which is fital for biofiltration) as wellas the oxygen , which is provided the spashing acction of the water going down the water fall, remember that a waterfall alone is probily not enough to aintain a koi pond! so DO a TRICKLE TOWER!!!! you will not be sorry!!!
