How do I work out Volume of water in pond by salt content? Can't Post

I ask this because I was told my pond should be 1600 Gallons (Imp.) after working it out by my pond mesurements. I added enough salt to make it 0.1% I asked here too so I got the dose rightWink (1g of salt per 1 Ltr of water)

I just bought a pond test kit which contains a salt test. When I tested it it was 0.3%Shocked and not 0.1%. So my pond volume is wrongCrazy

Does anyone know how to work out the water volume by how much salt is in there? I heard that it can be worked out that wayUnsure

While I'm here here's the other readings :

Amonia 0, Nitrite 0, pH 7.8, 0 AlgaeWink

BTW can I keep it at 0.3% salt with oxygenating plants in? I have done a partial water change since doing the salinity test so I'll test it again in a couple of days.

Thanks in advanceWink

Hi Thorin, if you're sure you have added 1g per 1L of water and your salinity test result is 0.3%, then you could surely work backwards to get your pond volume, which should be just 1/3 your present assumed volume, i.e 1600/3 = 533gal. So in reality, you've added 3g per 1L of water. It's alright to maintain salinity at 0.3% for upto 2 weeks. Thereafter you'll have to dilute. Your water parameters look good except for the zero algae which I'm not too sure about. Some plants can tolerate upto 0.3% salinity while others cannot. For details please look at topic on salt as medication. Smile

Thanks dttkWink

I gave my measurments to a friend who told me my pond was 1600G (uk)Mad

I have worked it out at just over 1000G (uk) I got the tape measure out. My salinity is now 0.2% after a partial water change.

Next year I'm going to make the pond deeper, About 6' D and keep it at 14' L x 7' W That should give me 3662.73 Gallons(uk) I don't know whether to opt for a bottom drain or not, As I plan on having a liner again. Anyone know the stocking level for a pond this size? If I go with a bottom drain then I'll make a 7' L x 2' W x 2' D filter. Is it big enough?

Sorry for the Q'sCrazyWink

Hi Thorin, good to know that you'll be having a deeper pond soon. In my opinion it is always better to have a bottom drain whenever possible. For a liner pond, this may require the help of an expert in bottom drain installation for liner ponds as it is more tricky and the chance of leakage is there if not done properly. To calculate the stocking level, use this formula. Measure total length of koi(inches). Square it. Multiply by 2. Divide by 231. Multiply by 10. The result is in gallons. Therefore, in your case, with a 3663gal pond, we should get about 205 inches or 17ft of koi. So you could keep 17 one-foot koi or 8-9 two-feet koi. For your pond, your filter surface area should be at least 30% that of the pond. Hence a filter size of 7ft length x 4ft width x 3ft depth is better. An alternative is 10ft length x 3ft width x 3ft depth. I prefer a filter depth of 3 ft because more space is available for water flow and settlement. Smile.

Thanks again dttkWink

Just 1 more thing, After doing a partial water change yesterday I noticed my pH is back up to 8.4 - 8.6 It was 7.8 and the water I put back in was 7.8 too.

Why should the pH go upCrazy I'm confused Unimpressed

Beats me too, Mike!Unsure Anyway, 8.4 is still within the comfortable parameter for kois.

What time did you do the pH test? Have you any buffering for your pond? By that, I mean using carbonate based stuff like cockles, oysters. shells, corals to prevent fluctuation of your pH.

Hi Thorin, pH fluctuations does occur day and night in a pond that is not buffered. As Johnson mentioned, having some buffering agents like shells, corals or baking soda is helpful to minimise such fluctuations. I suspect your tap water is hard and thus raising the pH of your pond after the water change. Don't worry as the pH will lower after some time. Smile

Thanks for the replies again dttk and Johnson LeeWink

My pH seems to be stable all day. Maybe ever so slightly higher by tea-time.

I don't have any buffer at the moment. Can I use any shells (If cleaned properly)? I'm going to visit my inlaws in august, They live near the beach where there are millions of different shells. I can get tons of them.

I have a filterbox suitable for a 2000 G(uk) pond with built in UV. Water sprays onto foam mats, then soaks through into volcano rock before exiting back to the pond.

So what is the best way for me to use the shells? On top of the mats?

Thanks

Hi, yes you could use any variety of shells as long as they are not difficult to clean by flushing. Try to place them into the last stage of filtration, in your case, after the volcano rocks. You could have them netted for easy removal for cleaning later. Smile
