How much chlorine can koi tolerate Can't Post

All Sifus,

I am new to rearing Koi . I would like advice if it is adviseable to have a float tap connected t0 a 600 Gallon water tank. I plan to pump that waste from the stmp to water my plants every morning. The amount of water will be max 10 pail/bucket or 50 gallons. This way my pond gets fresh water everyday and waste and urine gets pump out to water my plants and at the same time conserve/better utilise the water.

Is it necessary to add hypo every morning to declorinate the water? If the water is left in the water tank overnight is it good enough. even if there are chlorine content will it be too dilute in a 4500 gallon pond ?

Appreciate you advice

You can aid the degassing of the chlorine gas in the water storage tank by aerating the water rapidly through the use of an airpump and a airstone. This normally drives off chlorine faster than allowing it to stand in an overnight situation.

If you ask, see if you can find out whether the water also contains chloramine. A phone call or information sheet from your water supplier could confirm chloramine content. It is used in some locations in addition to or alternative to chlorine.

I would say it will be ok to the fish. However, i suggest that you place the fresh water inlet far away from your filter intake, in order not to kill the "good bugs", in case of any excessive clorine.

Frown.I lost all my Koi due to chlorine... the water we drink, at least in Florida. test at 3.0... and that will Kill Koi!!! That is, the water coming out of the tap, you can drink it but it burns the koi's gills....I too have asked the question as to how to remove Chlorine on a replacement basis...I have a small chlorine filter that I put my water through for the pond but it is only rated to do 3000 gals... question is... when it quits ... you are not aware!!!!!!!!!!!! Looking of a better or longer filtering solutions.

Jimar1,
I suggest you buy a chlorine meter or tester even though you have a dechlorinator. That will clear your mind and save a lot of unnecessary worries.

Understand... And I have one... I test when I start to add water, but that doesnt tell me when after XXX gals in the pond that it is still non-chlorine free!!!... Has to be a better way.... and relatively reasonble in price.

Jimar1,
Did you mean that using the chlorine tester on both the incoming water and the pond? you have tried to dechlorinate the storage water prior to release it into the pond? Shocked. Then after a few hours, check the chlorine level in the pond to see whether the level has dropped? With the daily flushing and water change with control, I am sure your chlorine level will drop. Unimpressed why not think of keeping the chloine level to harmless level? I dont have the figure with me but can find out for you on the maximum exposure of chlorine that koi should get no more than that.

My Koi pond (previously a 5,000 gallon in-ground pool) loses up to 2-3" of water in a single day in the summer. I simply put the water hose in at the top of my waterfall and fill'er up. No chemical or noth'n.

When our tubing going to the fall disconnected last summer the pond lost a foot of water. I simply filled it up the same way over a couple of days (a few inches a day) and it was not a problem.

While I acknowledge chlorine is bad, you can use some common sense - lots bad, a little okay.
