Koi and Turtles together? Can't Post

Hello,

I'm am totally new to this forum, and to koi fish in general. I was wondering if anyone knows if koi and pond turtles would get along ok? I just got a new house that came with a large koi pond and I'm trying to learn what I need to take care of it or even make it nicer.

Also, does anyone have a site online they'd recomend for buying new koi?

Thanks a bunch!

No, bad idea - fish is the primary diet of fresh water turtles and they will (depending on the size of them) either eat or at the least damage any fish in the pond. Turtles also carry all kinds of nasty diseases that are pretty much harmless to them, but could be deadly to Koi. You will have to decide on one or the other. Remember that turtles require large rocks or the like to pull themselves out onto to sunbathe etc. They are not great swimmers and will eventually drown if put in a pond where they have nowhere to get out. Also most species require fairly high water temps all year - fine if you live in Florida, not so fine if you live in Canada.

As for buying Koi online - not something I would ever personally do - you are far better off seeing the fish first hand. Let us know where in the world you live and I'm sure someone will be able to help you.

Well I guess there's a mighty clear answer to that question! Thank you for that crucial and pertinent information. I live in the bay area of California (central California) and my pond has been at roughly 65-70 degrees since I've had it. It might get a bit colder later in the winter. My pond is round, with a 17' diameter and 2'-3' deep. I plan on having a large water fall/pump for oxygenation. How many Koi can safely live in a pond that size? I will add more slowly of course, so they have a chance to aclimate the changes.

About buying online: that's what I figured as well, but I thought I'd check to see if anyone has had a positive experience with it. There's a guy who sells Koi in my town, I'll probably just buy from him.

Thanks for the info Mr. Bump!

I'm with Mr Bump on the Turtles. Koi do much better without them.
If you are in the Bay area you might want to check out PSKoi in Martinez. They stock some very nice fish and they (and others) will have sales tanks set up at the Sacramento Koi Show this weekend (Jones Hall, Placer County Fairgrounds). Try to make it to the show if you can. It will be a great learning experience and you might even get to meet Toshio Sakai (Matsunosuke), who is the head judge this year. Sakai-San will be giving a lecture at some point during the show as well so it should be a great opportunity.
