Kusuri Klay and Fish Flicking Can't Post

I have recently purchased the Kusuri Klay which is supposed to improve the water quality by adding important minerals. But I noticed the fishes are flicking right after I pour the diluted mud (with the pond water) into the pond. Is this normal? I am a little concern to repeat that.

Re: [etano] Kusuri Klay and Fish Flicking [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi there.

I have been using Kusuri Clay for quite some time now. I have not noticed any abnormal behavior of my kois like what you described.
However they get 'terrified' if the water visibility is suddenly reduced to a very low extent if I put too much of the clay into the pond.
Therefore I usually use a quarter or half of the recommended dosage over 1-2 days.

Please take note that too much of it may kill off the good bacteria in your filtration system, thereby altering the water chemistry.
I suggest you test your water PH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate level and observe your kois carefully for any signs of infection.

Regards.

i already have good water conditionsm so i prefer mixing kusuri clay with the food pallets. thus my tub last longer and the effects of the mineral go direct to the kois.
kois flash when theres a sudden change in their environment, or theyve got parasites. if its a sudden change try check your parameters, if its ok then try scoop the flashing koi to see any parasites. then if not theyll stop flashing once they get use to the clay

Thanks for the reply. I will give it a few more tries. I curious how do you mix the pellets with the clay? Do you crush the pellet and mix them all up with water? Do you notice any improvement on the fishes development?

Hi etano,

Try pouring the dissolved Klay slowly at one corner of your pond so that the substance will settle down
and not gets into the gills of the koi which will cause irritation and hence resulting in the flicking/flashing.

Normally, it is easier to mix the Klay/Refresh powder together with paste food for feeding. When mixing
with pellets, a plastic spray container is usually used to spray the dissolved Klay onto the pellets which
are lay out in the open and then left to dry before feeding.

Hi etano,

No worries, it's normal. The finely granulated powder will inevitably cause slight discomfort to the koi but they'll adapt within minutes. I've been using Klay for years and there has not been a single mishap from its application Wink.

For those who use Kusuri Super Growth paste food, there's no need to add Klay as Super Growth is already formulated with it.

Cheers,
Dennis

Hi Dennis, Etano & All,

I am a user of Kusuri klay as well and I am inclined to agree with Dennis regarding its benefits and application.

In addition to Kusuri klay I also occasionally use Kusuri Super C which is a sludge buster. I do this when I have no time to clean the filter chambers but only periodically. There is no substitute, however, for removing the filter elements on a rotational basis to give them a good dousing.

A month prior to koi shows I use refresh powder to help bring up the shine on the koi.Wink

The above adds to increasing the costs of our hobby. But I reckon it is worth it.

Cheers.

Hi Jem,

You are absolutely right... there is really no substitute to regular filter maintenance. I've been a koi slave every saturday (2 hours cleaning the filter) the past 4 years Unsure.

The KL koi community has been a little quiet lately as there wasn't the usual buzz from the missing ZNA annual koi show. However, the retail sector is still pretty much alive and there are some pretty impressive (read: expensive Wink) koi finding new homes, albeit behind the scene.

Cheers,
Dennis

Thanks Jem, Dennis for sharing your experience. Now entering the season with so many good looking kois arrivals, it's hard not to overstock the pond.
