Newbie to Koi - Dog sick from drinking from pond?? Can't Post

Hello and forgive my total lack of knowledge on Koi ponds and the like. We bought a house with a 10 Koi pond about a year ago and we love to watch them. We hired a local Koi guy to maintain it since we aren't up to speed with how to do it ourselves.

A few days ago our black lab got Clostridium botulinum and almost died from it. The vet said she might have gotten it from drinking the pond water. Is there a chance she got it from drinking from the pond? If so, is there any way to get rid of that hazard without hurting the fish.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hello, First of all, dogs like to get into everything, that includes TRASH CANS , dead animals ect! If your koi guy is a PRO he can test your water! If your koi are doing good, then I would rule out the pond! But if your pond has GREEN water and there is a bad oder, then maybe it came from the pond! I would suspect something other than the pond!
Even the FRIEND next door may not like your dog!

Sorry to hear about your dog. My dog drinks out of the pond pretty frequently and I have never noticed any ill effects.

Hi, our dogs swim in the pond. Which of course we had to stop that, as the fish are up on the top, now that the weather is warmer. Our dogs drink it swim in one of our ponds still. If must be a neighbor. We have a neighbor, who does not like our dogs. You can put one of those wire fences, the underground type. Put a collar on your dog and it will keep them out. We had to do that, as I said our dogs want in both our ponds all the time. I can't let them in the small pond. Try the fence idea, it really works great. You just bury the wire in the ground where you don't want your dogs to go. Take care, LyndaPirate

I have lots of things that drink from my pond including my cats and have no problem. It sounds like your dog had a bacterial infection? If you really want to know what's in the water to it to your county extension agent. People that have wells can send their water in to see if there is anything harmful in it for humans. It costs about 6o dollars here. Cheaper than a fence. Or you can take a sample to the vet and ask him to send it to the lab to check for that particular infection.
It's much more likely that a dog would pick up something like this from something he ate.
I wouldn't allow him to swim in the pond. My neighbor's dog burnt two of my pumps from dog hair wrapping around the empeller shaft. Expensive!
Also make sure you tell your pond guy that your dog drinks from the pond. There are some fairly toxic stuff they put in ponds I wouldn't want my mammal friends to drink.

Good Luck!

Hi there,
no problems with pumps in our mud pond. Wink That is what I was referring to when I posted a response. Our other pond, the smaller one has the more expensive koi in it, and the pumps that of course we do not need doggy hair in it. We have the underground fence around that, as the dog (golden retriever) was knocking in all the rocks. It sure works keeping him out of the smaller pond. I hate to take the mud pond away from him. He would just go crazy, he loves the water and the small koi stay way on the bottom.
