Sunning coral chips/oyster shells.. Can't Post

Hi all,

Does the efficiency of the coral chip/oyster shells to release calcium carbonate into the water decreases over time? Thus the need to sun them to kill off the bacteria that thrive on every surface of the coral/oyster?

Sunning the Coral or Oyster shell is good before adding to the filter system, as it will help to kill off any undesirable bacteria that may be growing on it, but not after is has been in the pond. The Bacteria that grows on it in the filter system is the kind you want for good biological filtration as the bacteria will live and feed directly from the good source of calcium carbonate. Over time it will have to be replenished, as the bacteria will literally consume it, but it is still good and inexpensive biomedia.
