Tested the water, fish jumping/flipping Can't Post

Hi everyone

Just tested the water. We just did a pond spring cleaning. Removing gunk on the bottom and leaves. We may of cleaned the filters too much. I know not to clean them alot, but husband Al, he has to clean. So he may of washed off all the good bacteria. Since the fish where jumping, not all just one from what I can tell. Also he/she was flipping and swimming on it's side for a little bit. I think they where after the bugs that are ontop of the water. They do jump, all last year they jumped somewhat for the bugs. No visible signs of any problems, and you can bet I get close and look.
Well here is the water figures
PH 7.2 (usually our PH from the well is 6.8) to me that is high for us
Ammonia 0-2.5. Kind of between the two.
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
Doesn't seem all that bad to me. The ammonia, the color was really not off 0 by much. So what does everyone think. Chasing bugs and flipping?? Thanks Lynda

Hi Lynda,

Did you add a lot of water/dechlor when you did your spring cleaning??? The ammonia of 2.5 is that ppm? if so that is pretty high. When koi flashes or jump usually something is wrong, they don't do it for no reason. Something is irritating your koi and they jump/flash hoping it will go away. Sometimes they behave like this due to new water added or change in water tempSmile

Feed them a few pellets per day to prevent ammonia spikeWink

rgds,
Jon

Hi there
The spring cleaning a few days ago. Got out alot of gunk from the winter. So something might of been stirred up from the bottom. The testing didn't exactly point to 2.5. Kind of halfway in color between 0 and 2.5 ppm. We have two filters that run all the time. We can always change some more water. We had thought they where after the bugs. Only one fish did that flashing or flipping thing. They are eating. I gather PH of 7.2 is okay. I gather we should rinse the filters again. As all that gunk was brought up to the filters. Of course we don't want to ruin the biological thing in the pond with cleaning the filters too much. We will leave the filters in the small filter alone. Thanks for the info. Lynda

Lynda,

Try to avoid having gunk build in your pond. This gunk is a good breeding area for nasties and you don't want thatAngelic Ammonia should be zero at all times, coz you clean the filters some good bugs got washes off so your filter got knocked back a little but should recover in no timeSmile I forgot to mention that koi behave like above if something got stuck in their gills tooWink

Jon

Jon
Thanks for the info. We looked at the filters and boy there was alot of gunk in them. I told Al you don't want to mess with the biological situation in the filters. So what is the safest way to clean and not destroy the biological situation? We have had our pond for years and never had an ammonia spike. So like you said, I bet he washed away all those great things in the filters, called bugs. I guess he has to put his waders on and get into the pond again. He will have to try to remove the rest of the gunk. We might try our fish tank cleane, it is a suction thingy to remove the rest of the gunk. We also have a mud pond. Which we just drained removed the koi and refilled. We had alot of Sushui in it. They looked great. Some of them grew so fast. Thanks for the info. Lynda and AlCrazy

Lynda,

It doesn't matter what you do, once you a major clean up of the pond or filters you will knock back the filter a little. Mature filters can easily recover. Maybe next time don't wait for the gunk to build upTongue

Hey Jon
The gunk was winter gunk, leaves and other things that fell into the pond during the winter. We always clean our pond in spring and in fall. But this year who knows what happened. I think all that filter gunk went into the water when Al pulled the filters out to clean them. Also one filter had given us problems. We have two filters running mostly. Until the one was over running and draining the pond. I think the pond has a mind of it's own. But I will make sure that the pond gets a good cleaning more often. Thanks alot, Lynda
