Total Alkalinity Test Can't Post

Read from www.lymnozyme.com web site's FAQ which says :-

Quote
Total Alkalinity is VERY IMPORTANT to all the benificial bacteria in our ponds. Total Alkalinity is the "backbone" for our pond to function. Total Alkalinity is the measurement of calcium carbonate in the water. Without a reasonable Total Alkalinity count, none of the benificial bacteria will function properly. ALL biological products, such as Lymnozyme or Micro-Lift, require T.A. to do their jobs. Also your nitrifying bacteria in your biofilter require T.A. to oxidize ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate.

Did you know that for every gram of ammonia that is processed in your biofilter, 2.5 grams of calcium carbonate is consumed by the biofilter. The minimum T.A. count for a pond is 80. Below 80, bacteria become sluggish and do not perform properly. A count of 100 or 120 is really needed for the biofilter or probiotics to function properly.

I just wonder what is the actual relationship between pH and Total Alkalinity.

How many of you actually carry out Total Alkanity Test ? As the Tetra test kits that I bought normally covers kits for pH, Nitrite, Ammonia but not Total Alkalinity.

The relationship between total alkalinity and pH is rather complex, I downloaded an article from the internet(can not find it now). I think it might be on "www.koiusa.com" /"running on empty".

I do total alkalinity test almost every day due to the rainy season. The run-off from my roof goes into my pond. I tried to keep it at 4 dKH or higher, but yesterday, it went down to about 3.

Hi Bancherd,

Hence is Total Alkalinity test similar to Total water hardness test or equal to it ?

Hi Ben,

Total Alkalinity, to me, is the most important thing for small pond, not so much in big pond as the total amount of carbornate could last a long time. Feeding the bugs is equally important.

For small, overstock and over feed pond without high KH your pH could crash in days. I wrote a piece related to this topic in cyberfins. You might find it useful, http://www.cyberfins.com/articles/bakingsoda.htm

Go for a kH of 8 using baking soda and you could keep your pH meter away. Smile Monitor the kH movement in relation to the feed is a good idea. Buy fish food and baking soda together from then on. Smile

Hi All
Pls do not get offended by my post -
A layman and hobbyist like many of us do not need to go indepth on this issue of alkalinity or acidic chemistry.
Having a pH at 7 is neutral. below 7 and downward means water are getting more acidic. On the contrary, with pH rising above 7 tells us that water is becoming more alkalic.
Koi are happy at between pH 7.5 to 8 for me. Others may experience 8 to 9 is better.

Just ensure that the hardness is not less than 8 otherwise just dump baking soda... Yes I mean DUMP! I use 100g per ton of water. Sometimes I use up to 200g just to bring up the KH to 10.

Hope this help.
