Using Magnet to increase dissolved oxygen Can't Post

Hi All,

While browsing through the April issue of the Nichirin magazine, I was intrigued with the
article ' My enjoyable pondlife ' written by Koi hobbyist's Takeshi Sakamoto.
Takeshi Sakamoto enjoys koi keeping in his 6 ton pond where he has 13 koi ranging
in sizes from 56cm to 74cm. Normally 13 koi in only a 6 ton pond are way overstock
for the water capacity but yet he had managed to grow them to above 70BU with good
body conformation.

His secret according to Takeshi Sakamoto is his following epoch-making ideas:-

1) Providing water return pipes to the bottom of the main pond to create water currents
in the water for koi to exercise for good body corformation. This is a widely known fact.

2) To keep pond water clean with 6 times a day of feeding, Takeshi Sakamoto hit upon a
solution by magnetic effect to increase dissolved oxygen in his pond water.
He attached 68 magnetic devices on the water pipes and aeration outlets from his
3 units of Air blowers. He says that a 50cm tosai can be 62cm long in just six months.

Sakamoto's methods of koi keeping has been awarded at the koi raising competition.
I am not a science person but am curious how and why the usage of magnetic sheets
wrapping around the pvc pipes and also the usage of magnetic balls can increase dissolved
oxygen. Anyone care to share their comments and thoughts on this intriguing method?

Best Regards,
Thiam Hwa

Hi Thiam Hwa,

Interesting concept. I have not read the article myself and would like to ask if there is any direct contact with the pond water. Most metals are toxic to koi even at very low trace levels. If they are just magnetic sheets wrapped around pvc pipes that are not submerged, then maybe...

I think it's particularly interesting in our tropical weather where warmer temperatures means that our pond water (unless chillers are used) cannot hold as much oxygen as compared with cooler waters. Could magnets be a possible solution or would our warmer waters still negate the increased oxygen effect of the magnets? Bear in mind that the article is about a Japanese hobbyist dealing with much cooler waters.

I also wonder if the hobbyist has done tests to prove that his oxygen levels actually went up with the use of magnets. I believe that in the cooler Japanese temperatures, a well-aerated pond would already have oxygen levels at saturation point. Maybe the effect on koi growth is something other than oxygen levels?

Cheers,
Paul

Hi Paul,

Those magnetic sheets are strapped around the pvc pipes after the water pump unit. These are not
submerged in the water at all. As per the diagrammatic drawing shown in the magazine, they was no
indication on the placement of the magnetic balls although there was a short length of magnetic pipe
being used for water flow into a filtration chamber. I am sure Takeshi Sakamoto must have known that
most metal are toxic to koi. Nonetheless, his koi in the pond has never had hole diseases or hikkui, amazing!

The article did not mentioned whether the hobbyist has done any tests to prove the increase in dissolved
oxygen. Maybe you are right that the effect on koi growth could be something else other than just
increase in dissolved oxygen level. If it was that simple, I would have magnets sticking all over my exposed
pvc water pipingsSlySly.

Best Regards,
Thiam Hwa

Hi ThiamHwa,

Is there any picture in the magazine? Could you please post a picture of how it was done?

There are scientific studies to prove his point, so he may be onto something:

It may be better to keep an open mind and find out how he did it.

Can I get a copy of his article? Plse PM me.

While browsing the Internet, I came across this article by Brian Dunning - Pond Magnet Foolishness

Another view on the subject.

All the studies you've cited involve there being copper, other metals, or 15% ammonia in the water when the oxygen increase takes place.

Hi ThiamHwa,

Are you experimenting the Magnet?

Hi Epal63,

I have not been experimenting with the magnet becos' my pond Total Dissolved Oxygen reading is at 85 which is already good. I think similar to the TDS reading
achieved by Momotaro Farm WinkWinkSly.
