Very high ph Can't Post

Does anyone know what causes very high ph. I have a friend who built a pond in his backyard. He has worked very hard. It is probably one thousand gallons. Made with a liner. He has used aged limestone around the edge and built two waterfalls from geods held in place with as little concrete as possible. He aged it, and let it sit. I had the ph correct last fall and introduced a few small koi. They lived all winter but died this spring. I checked his numbers and they were perfect except for the ph. My kit only goes to 9 so it's higher than that. I corrected for this last year(down to 8) with vinegar thinking it was the concrete but it's back this year. Any advice about what could be causing this?

Jenny,

If you want a very reliable PH meter I would recommend purchasing an electronic PH meter from either a:

*pool shop
*electronics shop
*local fish shop
*eBay

These units measure from 0-14 unlike the limited scope of a PH drop test kit, and can be used anytime, any day very easily.

Your fish may have been affected from alkalosis (high PH). Often it kills very fast because the water is too acidic for them to live in.

The limestone is a potential cause of the high PH, although the source water used to top up the pond should also be measured to see what PH it is in.

Rats- I thought high ph was too alkaline like bleach and low ph was acidic like, ah, acid. I know both will eat your skin off if too high. Yeah, sounds like I need a good meter. So how high is too high for Koi?

Anything beyond PH 8.5 is high but will not kill fish, beyond 9 will slowly killing fish. You can you bicarbonated soda to lower the PH. Bicard soda has a neutral buffer of 8.4 which is very safeSmile
