Hans scared the hell out of me on the long qurantine period(at least 4 to 6 weeks) ...just joking. These are ideal periods if you could resist temptation.

For some of you who are daredevils like me, 2 weeks is the minimum period. When the fish kick the bucket, we kick our bumps....just another silly joke.
Alot goes down to how well you know your dealers. Good luck.

Hello Mark!
I have been a Daredevel on the beginning also .My Kois keep kicking the bucket ,faster as i could replace them ,because i used a lot of short cut ,like as no quarantine or to short quarantine .Some dealer the do quarantine the fish ,but most dont.SO I think it is much cheaper und safer to do Quarentine the koi.

Regards Hans

Hi guys,

just to add on, quarantine is a must. I bought a koi 3 months ago and did the lazy and stupid thing - put the fish straight into the pond when I got home. 3-4 days later ALL the fish in the pond fell sick. It took me 1 week and lots of time/money/anxiety to overcome the problem.

Quarantine is a must.

Cheers !

Hi Everyone and especially to the NEWBIES,
All of us have our fair share of nightmares and based on these experiences, we agree that all new stock needs to be quarantined. Bravo!

Regards.

Hi,
Anyone care to share your quantine protocol? I did an overnight PP for my last 5 fish and that was a bad idea. End up treating the whole pond. Wonder the problem is over yet. Frown

Hi Mark,

They seem to be OK, eat well and less funny swimming style.

Actaully, I bath all the big guys with 3% salt a week plus back when I notice a couple of them swim funny. I salt bath them in a tank for 5-10 mins till they lost balance before returning them to the pond. I took the opportunity to check them out in the tank as well. Didn't find any visible problem. I also clean up the pond and had a 90% water. Added 3 bags of Zeolite to keep the Ammonia down.

The Zeolite are out of the pond, Ammonia is zero but some Nitrite 0.25mg/l or so.

mmmph.... nitrite = pretty high! Looks like the problem is pointing to the filtration system huh!

Don't overfeed your fish. I know all of us do that and that includes me - aiyah! can't resists the temptation especially when the they surfaced to "greet how's their daddy do today" lah!

Anyway, glad to hear fish are all ok... but do something abt the nitrite level.

Hi Mark,

You are right. How to stop feeding. The fun is all in the feeding. Looking at them charging for food make everybody happy. Not only me, my wife and kids like it too. Frown

I think the bio-filter is doing OK, just a little under size. The Nitrite reading is back to zero this evening, ammonia is still zero. It must be the overfeeding over the weekend. Total about 100g of pallet food, one and a half orange and some water lattuce. The water is turning a little green and brown also. Got to reduce the food supply. Smile or add one more filter. Still thinking of how to hide the ugly filter.
