Water evaporation and topping off Can't Post

I just finished my new pond a few weeks ago it is 13 by 21 feet about 4,500 gallons with a 17 inch wide waterfall that first falls about 12 inches then drops off another 8 inches to the pond.
One thing I noticed is it seems to lose about a 1/4 inch of water a day so in a week it is down 2 inches.
Is this type of evaporation normal?

I have looked for leaks and if the falls is splashing over but haven't found anything, about the only thing I can't check is the skimmer to liner area but maybe this amount of evaopration and topping off is normal. We are in central Illinois and while, the temps have been lower than normal the sun has been shinning most every day.

Thanks for any advice.

Re: [AlanH] Water evaporation and topping off [In reply to] Can't Post

I have a frog pond that does the same thing. Last year I thought I had a leak in the waterfall area. So in the early spring before I turned it back on I use black foam to fill the little gaps between rock along the side of the waterfall. I still have about a lose of 1/8 to 1/4 inch of water during the hot Texas summer months with no leaks detected. It was suggested to me that I could test the evaporating on the waterfall by covering it with plastic and see if I still loose water. But it is for the birds and frogs so I'm not too worried about adding tap water here and there. My koi pond has no waterfall and water loss is very minimal. Good Luck.
