What water temperature in your fish pond, in Malaysia? Can't Post

Koi's colour quality always drop when they reach Malaysia. Do you have any method to prevent this problem? What water temperature in your fish pond, in Malaysia? I only can get 25.5 degree celcius during rainy day as the lowest, and 29 degree celcius for the maximum. My pond is in open space, but it is cooling down by waterfall and aeration support. I still don't happy with it. Please give suggest.

Best Regards,

Dear Khoo BG,

I can't tell you the actual dimension of my KOI pond, because the pond was in irregular shape. It was approximately one and a half feet depth, and about 3 meter square for surface area. This dimension doesn't include the external 300 gallon filter, which made by fibergrass. Hope this information will give you some help.

Thanks

David

Hi David,

I don't think water temperature is the main factor that the Koi quality deteriorate when they are imported into Malaysia. I presume that with your existing KOI Pond, it will be good to have some sort of shade to cut down direct sunlight.

The other things that you need to take care of is your water quality. I read from your the other post in the pond construction section that you use a 300 gallon fibreglass filter. What I can see here is that your pond does not have any bottom drain and dirt will accumulate in your pond as time goes by unless you clean the pond regularly.

Do you have any water plant within your filter system to get rid of the nitrate or how often you change your water ? What is the PH of the your pond now ? PH is one of the main factor affecting the colour.

Hope you will post some reply so that we can discuss further.

Hello David

To reduce water temp. by having a shade
a deeper pond min.5ft. using waterfall only
at night and have a misting system.
water temp. has a relationship to the
amount of oxygen contained in the water.
the higher the temp, the lower the oxygen
saturation.
I,dont think temp. is the main factor what
I,can see here is that your pond is very
shallow - Koi pond should have a min. depth of five foot , one must consider when rearing koi in a tropical climate ,to cut down harmful temp. fluctuation.
Good water quality is very important for
keeping healthy Koi.
Partial water change 10% daily to keep nitrate low as possible.
Few ,parameters that we need to know and control.
P.H = 7.2 - 7.8 hardness 50 - 150 ppm
Do -min 5 ppm , Alkalinity 50 - 100 ppm
Co² less than 5 ppm , Nh³ less than 0.005
ppm.
Pond and filter maintenances regulary
Don't try to keep koi , Learn how to keep water then the koi will "keep themselves"
best regards Hans,

Hi buddy,

cch,
You are right. There have no any bottom drain for both of my pond. The small pond is totally flat at the bottom. The dirt will accumulate at the corner of the pond. I made the water flow out from the top of the corner, so the dirt will follow the water movement to the inlet of the pump. I have to clean the pond everyday, even everytime I am visiting the koi. The falling leave make me crazy. But the plants around the pond is almost ten years. Let me send you some picture next time. The large pond do have gradient at the bottom. So, it should no problem. What kind of water plant do have? I don't have very accurate pH for my water, but it should be around 6.9 to 7.3. Could you tell me what is the water temperature of your pond? why do I care about the temperature? Of course, there are some reasons. Do you ever visit Hong Kong Koi's store? May be you do know Mr Loo, an experinced koi retailer in Hong Kong. He told me that, if we want to keep good koi in Malaysia, use air-conditioner to reduce the indoor pond's temperature. Oh! what a joke. Besides that,Mr Taro Kodama from Miyoshiike koi farm told me that the tropical climateof Malaysia hard to grow good koi. Do you know this farm at all. The web page is www2u.biglobe.ne.jp/~kodama/ . If you like to read his email, feel free to ask.

Hans Ham,
Thanks for your information, I really appreciated it. But let me continue it on tommorrow, I am really tired now. Hope to hear from you soon.
Thank you.

Buddy,
David LEE

Hi Khoo,

Here is the email between me and Mr Taro Kodama:

1) According to the climate of Ishigakaki, will the Nishikigoi in Ishigaki Koi Farm grow faster than usual?

>Yes, they will. Since Malaysia's climate is similar, we suppose, they will grow fast and healthy in your country as well.

2) From the photograph of Nishikigoi on your web page, they are absolutely beautiful and marvellous. Do you hear such problem like this before -- The "Hi" of the Nishikigoi didn't grow at the same time it get bigger, because the Nishikigoi grow too fast under hot weather? So the "HI" pigment can't
come out at the same time. Someone in Hong Kong told me this sort of things, as I am keeping koi in Malaysia. Is such things true or not?

>It is true. That is why our tosai is big but the color is weak. But as they grow, the color will be enhanced gradually. Samll koi from Niigata is verty beautiful. But they are not actually tosai. They are 2 year old but were forced to stop growing for breeders to enhace the color. That is why small and beautiful koi from Japan often lose color after arriving hot countries like Malaysia. Since the climate allows them to
grow faster and biger, the Hi can not catch them.
Thank you

Best regards,

Taro Kodama

Does he mean our koi will only get good quality colour when they stop growing? I try to feed my koi only once a day to reduce their growth, does this workable? Please, free to say somethings.
Thank you

Best regards,

Hi David,

Provided your water quality is A ok, and your pond is deep enough , the other method of increasing color (since you're not happy with the color) is to look into food, I've seen my friends feed fish pellet , apparently from Sakai Farm which they feed twice a month in order to improve the red pigment {hi} , but I must warn you, this stuff is highly concentrated , and if the fishes are fed too much or only regular basis , then even the white skin turns yellow , sometimes red,you wouldn't what that to happen??In hot climate like ours, due to high humidity, the growth of fishes is rapid , so the scales are not as compact as they should be, leading to lighter tones compared to the ones in Japan.Anyhow, try this method, or maybe use food that uses spirulina, this one you can use on regular basis.Bye.

i came across a very wealty koi keeper (begineer in singapore) that have a chiller for his koi pond. electicity bill of course is extremely high but money wasnt his concern at all. the issue is that whether this chiller thing is useful or just some irresponsible pond maintainance contractor trying to get make money out of this.
