filling the pond Can't Post

Hi koi lovers

I'm very new to this hobby. I've just finished constructing my pond which i've started six months ago. it is made of concrete 12f x 5ft x 3ft. I'm preparing to fill water in my pond. I need some advise on the the steps that should be taken. the amount of anti chlorine for instance? salt ? anythings else which i should do to make the pond ready for the fish?

thank u in advance

You really should not add salt unless the fish are stressed (to stimulate slime coat), have ich, or you have high nitrite readings.

SmileAdd some water plants that kind of help things along the way, let the pond cycle for about a month and then add a few goldfish and see how they do before you add koi. If the goldfish survive, the koi will. Let the goldfish stay in the water for a couple of weeks to make sure everthing is ok before adding koi. Get you a water test kit and check water quality before adding fish and make sure you get one that will check everthing When you fill the pond go to your water meter and look check it and when you fill the pond you can tell how many gallon of water that you have in your pond or go to a web site that sells pond liner and they will have a place where you can type in the size of your pond and it will tell you how many gallons you have. You can also stay away from chimicals if you want, If your water has colorine in it you can let the water stay in the pond and up and running for at least 4 days and the colorine will disapate in the air if you have a good waterfall. This is what I do because I dont like chemicals. Also when you add the goldfish to your pond this will help establish your pond, that is why you need to wait a couple of weeks before adding koi.Wink If you know someone that has a established pond see if they will let you have a piece of there eatablished filter and you can put your fish in the next day. You can give them a new piece of your filter pad in place of the old oneWink

This is what I did as DTTK advised me.

Fill it with water and soak it for about a week. Test it and see if the reading are ok, drain all the water and fill it up again. Add some cheap koi or goldfish after a week and keep on testing for ammonia, nitrate and PH. Add fish every week when readings are ok.

Congratulations on the new pond. Agreed with all advisors you should cycle the water at least 1 month. But what filter system have you installed for your pond?? Size??

You don't need bioballs you may choose to use any media you want. You should get a detoxifier, and you might wanna check if your city uses chloramine or chlorine, unlike chlorine chloramine is much more stable and will not go away unless detoxified. You should be able to find some detoxifier at your local koi dealer or any aquarium store. If not you can get some at big al's online http://www.bigalsonline.com/catalog/product.xml?product_id=28319&category_id=2229&pcid1=2207, to me that is a veeeeerrry good deal. searchem prime detoxifiers 5 times more than other brands that i have used for some reason.

The brushes and mats are adequate, and any other media can do as long as you provide a lot of surface area for the bacteria to adhere to and grow. You can seed them with bacteria starter that you can buy from most pet shops otherwise it will take sometime for the bacteria to establish.

Hi--- what is the name of the bacteira starter as when I used this I still lost most of my koi. My pond was done by a pro. and I thought everything was ok. And have you used this with good success?
