good water parameters, but .. Can't Post

hey guys ,
i've had my pond good and running for about over 2 years .. i have a 3000 gallon pond with about a 900 gallon (in total) filter .. it consists of chambers of up/down mats, 4 cubic feet of kaldnes which has all matured prior to the construction of the pond, and rolled up mats in the blue filter containers (55gal) .. i keep up on my water parameters every week, pH around 7.8, amonia/nitrites/nitrates all well around 0 .. i flush my vortex every day, and because its hot, fill my pond with fresh de-chlorinated water with a volume of about 5 ~ 10% a week .. but recently, some of my precious koi have been dying off one by one .. sometimes theres no external symptoms, sometheres there is .. my chagoi was the first to go .. her lips were swollen and the top of her head there were small spots that were almost like .. rotting i guess you could say .. it looked as if something was eating away at the slime .. but it was rather small, treated it with salt bath followed by ointment privided by our local koi shop .. then i had another koi who had similar symptoms .. i looked at their gils and it looked normal, but until i looked at the other side .. there was spots of white fungus-looking things .. so i suspected viral infections are killing them .. i recently did a 30% water change .. i'm trying to continue to do this as each day goes by to help lessen the effects .. can someone help me identify what is wrong ?? im sorrie i cannot get pictures at the moment .. i'll try to update with photos if possible .. also, i want to know if malachite green will help fight against this or any medication .. please help, thanks a lot in advance

Cheers

Re: [Toan] good water parameters, but .. [In reply to] Can't Post

hi toan..

i hv keep koi and study water quality for sometime.. never i have reach zero nitrate before.. the lowest i get is 12ppm..
even my fresh water supply shows almost the same reading.. at this level my koi are very healthy..

have u check the temperature of the water? the diffrent temperature in the morning and nite.. fluctuation of temperature can be stressful to koi..

have u check u media? are they packed with fish waste? the higher the temperature the faster the 'rotten' effect of the waste.. also the higher the temperature the lower the dissolve oxygen content..

my advice wud b....
1. check temp. in the morning and evening daily. keep the record.
2. check dissolve oxygen day n evening..
3. clean ur media if they r clog with fish waste..
4. check if ur nitrate/nitrite and ammonia tester still working..

i think ur problem is bacteria infections.. instead of "treating" for the bacteria infection try find the "cause" of the multification of bad bacteria..

good luck

Re: [koi@kit] good water parameters, but .. [In reply to] Can't Post

hey thx for the quick reply ,
well sry if i said the reading was zero .. what i mean is theres not much trace as in the color chart that the kit gave me, its always on the low end (lime green color for ammonia , 0~0.25 mg/l .. lime green for NO2 , <0.3 ~ 0.3 mg/l ) .. didnt mean to offend you .. we usually buy new kits every other month .. maybe its because it tells me in mg/l whereas you are talking about ppm .. i dunno , i am sorry

as far as the filter .. we flush it out every other day to keep things fresh n clean .. what we do is we dump half the original water that was in there prior to us cleanin .. then shake off what we can, and spray it with pond water to get any large debris out .. same for everything .. the kaldnes tends to get waste stuck in there but we didnt think it was a big issue .. what can we do to clean it without damaging the bateria that has already grown ?? .. like earlier, we can use a hose n spray it with pond water, but for the most part it, it can only get out so much =[

temperature during the night is around the high 40degrees fahrenheit/low 50degrees fahrenheit .. durning the day its about mid 60's.. and rarely anything over that .. we have a patio-type shading over, lets some light in , but not too much

thanks again and i'll try to keep a record of accurate readings of temperature and DO .. greatly appreciated

Cheers

hi toan..

not a problem at all.. just sharing and learning from each other.. sorry if i sound harsh too hahahhahahah..

seems like u r doing a good job with ur filter system and water condition.. just want to share this with u, mg/lit is also call ppm..Wink

Re: [koi@kit] good water parameters, but .. [In reply to] Can't Post

hey again ,
i recently checked my DO levels and i just noticed that it was about 7ppm .. and if i remember correctly , koi need anywhere from 8ppm - 14ppm .. 8 is border line but shouldn't go any lower .. that would mean my koi would be more suceptible to diseases and/or infections .. could this a possible cause of my fish dying ?? .. im not completely sure, but just a thought .. if anything, i still dont want it to drop below 8ppm .. so i added another air pump to the pond (40w 13.5gal/min) with 8 air stones .. so that makes two 40w air pumps im running .. do you think this is too little air still ?? i'll do more checks during throughout the day .. thanks in advance

DO depend on temperature, pressure and salinity. Check this link for the saturated value. ie maximum DO at various conditions.

DO of 14 mg/l is achievable only at 1.5 C at atmospheric pressure. So 7 mg/l may be ok depending on your pond water temperature. Again where you take your water sample may also affect the reading.

Hi Toan..

yongfan is rite.. DO depends on temperature etc.. dissolve oxygen is the water's ability to dissolve oxygen not how much air pump u add to ur water. air pump only shake the surface of the water making air exchange more efficient..

improve ur filter system is a few ways u can do..

after i switch to bakki shower with 200kg Bacteria House, my water temperature falls from 30'c to 27'c.. dissolve oxygen at 27'c hits around 12ppm.. i also experience low oxygen content when water reached 30'c..

hope those helps..
