how many koi in 5000 liter tank Can't Post
i have a 5000liter 1300 gallon outside tank
the depth of the tank is about 1 meter 3.3 feet deep
as has square form (i am telling this because of hint about air surface)
the thing is i donīt have any filter but i can do water changes at will!!! the tank is used to irrigation especially in summer!
i already have there 4 CARP from 20 to 50 centimeters!!!
and 3 Bagre african catfish about the same size!!!
all fished by me a year ago
now i ask how many koi can i have in it without the filter and
also without those other fishes (but also plz give me a number with them in it)
and im asking about the number of koi in long term!!!
until they are big and show up all their color!!
they will eventually mate with the carp so i probably will have to remove them in long term correct?
another thing is it a good idea to mix will koi that we have in the rivers here in portugal that can be totally bloodred or bloodred plus white !!

another thing the fishes i have brought anchor worm how can i get reed of them ?
i will not add koi without killing the parasite!!

and finally what kind of koi should i buy ?
are "yellow /black and red" kois really koi ?
or should i pick other color and also the size you advise
sorry so many question!!!!
i have loved koi since i was a child and went to a public aquarium were was an outside pond with lots of huge kois in it
but im really a newbie in coldwater fish

change water at will ... how often? everyday? continuous?

so, the moment you forget to change water, there's a great chance they die.

re: them breeding, they probably will not breed in that environment, even if they do ... they'll eat their own eggs. breeding koi is pretty complicated

that is exactly the purpose of my question !!! Wink

letīs see if i do for example a weekly water change how many koi can i keep !!!
i dont need many only a few to enjoy them!
(i can discard the other fish they are very shy)

are KOI much more weak than CARP arent they from the same family ?
this is a question i must ask because i really dont know Blush
i say this because the water i have now has not been changed for almost a month!!
should have change it already i was to change today but will change tomorrow
and they are still growning!!

but if i add koi i will do more changes!!

i accept suggestions in that issue also!!!!!!

as i sayd im really newbie

(in long term i will probably wont resit and will build a pond but thats not for the near future)

im asked from the breed to when i could have them in prime conditions not for now but tanks again


i see ill have to see if a diy filter is available or else ill will buy one later when i can resist no more the desire of having koi

Breeding Koi is difficult?? I started with 5 Koi and now have 35! I am using a converted Hot tub for my pond. I also live in Ohio! Lots of plants. Exterior filter. I use barley hay. No chemicals at all. I do use pond salt. They breed every year. I have to cull the babies to prevent overcrowding. The only fish I have ever lost were at the hands (beak) of a Blue Heron. The Heron met an unexpected death and I solved that problem. What am I doing wrong?

tanks ill try to get the filter soon!
i will probably if i can erradicate the parasites keep only the larger carp and 1 or 2 catfish but later will be 100% koi for shure.

a bath tub? what volume? and what is the barley hay for?

my objective is not breed them but it would be nice!

i gess ill put only 3 or 4 in the begining!

The barley hay is to remove algae. I don't use chemicals because my dog drinks the water. The key is plenty of plants and I use an UV filter in the spring to diminish the algae bloom. The exterior filter does a good job of filtration and is easy to clean since it is above ground.

how do you do it just put the hay in the tank?
for how much time?
i would also be interested in that since my water when changed is to watering a field of vegetables

The barley is available from my local nursery. It's bundles in a log sahpe about 1 foot long and 6 inches in diameter. As it decays it produces bacteria that reduce algae. Here in Ohio many of the farmers use bales of the stuff in their farm ponds. Less expensive than chemicals and a whole lot better for the environment.

Dear All, are we having the kois as an ornamental fish for showing off or for food? Carps were originally bred for food until the Japanese spotted colour variations and bred them for ornamental purposes.

I agree with aragorn on the following points;

1. Filter systems.

It is advisable to install a filter systems for ponds as the water is stagnant and needs to be recycle to allow for convertion of waste from the fishes. What systems is up to you to choose. My preferences is the the trickle tower.

2. No of fishes.

You can put as many as you like. However for the size of the pond, it is advisable a maximum of 6. This allow for room to swim and to grow. I like the analogy of the numbers of children you can put inside your house with the number of toilets you have. WOULD you put 10 children inside your house where you have to get rid of thier waste on a daily basis? weekly basis?

3. Types of fishes.

You can put as many types of fishes as you like. If you are serious of taking up koi keeping, then the apprecaition of only kois inside the pond is very different.

4. Breeding

Like aragorn said breeding is complicated not difficult. Going from 35 kois to 350 kois is fantastic for a fish farm meant to supply the fish market. To get the type of kois that we want to put into our ponds is a long process of carefull selection with years of expertise thrown in. It is encouraging to try breeding yourself but for me, I will leave it to the experts. I find it a lot of fun to attend koi shows where you can see many beatifull koi and meet fellow keepers to learn and to exchange information.

ill see if i can get the filter soon so i can add the koi but i am during university exams time so koi will have to wait a little Frown

but tanks for all your supplied info it is and will be very helpfull

i gess 4 or 5 should be enougth for me Laugh so they can get big

as to breeding asked so i would know about it they will breed if they want !

just want some pretty mouths out of the water!
